Yeah, I should just take my ball and go home, I think. I'll never match half the quality of your practice mockup.

So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

If you do that, I will take my stuff down with extreme prejudice. Prejudice that will be highly ironic given the source material.

Basically, please please please don't do that. I might be learning different things than someone else is, but I'm still learning. And we can learn from each other by sharing our works, which is like the entire point of this exercise. It's not a contest, it's about stylistic exploration and practice.

Oh, I won't go. It's just really daunting starting out with 0 background and seeing how far I'm (mostly) going to have to teach myself. Now if this were a poetry thread, then we'd see what's what...

And the whole point of this exercise is for people to be learning - if you ask me, you're in the most desirable position in regards to effort vs. potential benefit. :P

PTW. This thread has been great, I just started school and joined the new art class, and this thread's linked me to some great material. So thank you! If there's any room left, may I join? I consider myself an inexperienced artist, and I just started to understand the concept of one-point perspective.

Dying of laughter?

Take my spot. Learning to draw is pretty much relative to me given that I now know more about how my mindset works (abstract thinker :v). I'll be busy in the next few weeks though due to midterms. And not panicking.

Also some things I've learned in learning how to draw:
> You are your worst, and best critic.
> Despite what you or others may say. Keep moving forward. Do not stop drawing based on commentary! Advance!
> Perspective. That seems to be my worst enemy, but in visualizing the scene at hand, it's pretty much easier to create it once you're seeing it clear in your mind's eye. Things like drawings out of the imagination and all that are mostly products of these.

Don't worry, staying here is the right decision. It's these sorts of things that make me go, "Brb, learning art forever"

EDIT: Although I have other art I'm pursuing right now, but make no mistake, I've bookmarked the books mentioned in this thread and hope to take a more thorough look later. I can't escape learning how to draw, because I really, really want to.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Alright, wrestled with the ancient scanner.

Here's my planning sketch from last night, if anyone is interested:

And the final. There are a couple lines that should have been erased but it's already scanned in so...

Here's a bunch of links to stuff that I found helpful, I'm just going to plop them down:

http://www.posemaniacs.com/: Generates random 3d models in various poses, also has 30 second drawing mode if you need to get a feel for free form figure drawing.

http://www.foxprints.com/tracy/misc/tutorial/char_drawing.html: A short guidelines tutorial.

http://analyticalfiguresp08.blogspot.ca/: Some figure studies that break down the shapes of the body.

http://moni158.deviantart.com/gallery/26778761?offset=0: Figure studies, tutorials.

http://www.itchy-animation.co.uk/tutorials/light01.htm: A detailed light tutorial.

http://www.polykarbon.com/tutorials/: Various small tutorials.

http://comicrazys.wordpress.com/category/famous-artists-cartoon-course/page/3/: All of the lessons in the 'Famous Artists Cartoon Course'.

I'd also recommend digging up each of Andrew Loomis' books, if you can find them.

Posting to watch/remind myself this exists later.

On topic, though a lot of the art tutorials on youtube are simply "How to draw exactly this and only this" there are some good ones that give you construction tools. I think my favorite is Draw with Jazza. A search should turn him up quickly, but I'll update with a link later.

Let's see, non-generic drawing advice? Difficult, difficult.

Really though, my only piece of advice is try and draw one kind of image (landscape, figures, anything technical and not too abstract, still-life, etc.) and keep getting criticism from peeps (Engravers guild) the more your draw something the better you get at it, if you go over to the engraver's guild you can see some progressions (i.e. a series of picture) in which I either draw mountains or clouds, anyways, when your done with one kind of image move on to another until you can draw anything you want, don't forget to go back and keep drawing things you've already drawn, and of course have fun.

Also: You'll always get yelled at about your art, whether it is actual constructive criticism or mindless hate, someone has something to say. The best advice? Listen.

"So.  Tl; dr: does anyone have access to resources that teach drawing in the same way that one teaches math, music, or programming?"

Well, the thing about visual art is that is is far more a perceptual skill then an analytical one. As flaky as this sounds, you have to learn how to see.

One thing you have to understand is the difference between symbols and the raw data of perception. If you want to draw a can of cola, for instance, you cannot be in the mindset of drawing a can of cola. You have to stop and let yourself experience the raw perception of the can in front of you. Where are the values? ( dark and light. ) What shapes can you break the object down into? Forget the concepts and focus on the experience. Even if you are drawing from your mind you must be ever careful to avoid falling into the trap of symbolism ( At least as you learn; Once you get a handle on how an object actually is stylization and symbolism can be an effective aesthetic choice.)

The best thing to do is draw from life - constantly. Learn how to see. Try to occasionally flip the canvas horizontally ( if traditionally hold the work up to mirror ) to remove your mental symbol of the work and to get back into the perceptual mode. Often a piece you were proud of looks like garbage when viewed this way. Look at your work honestly - it will be trash when you start, and the fact that you can recognize this means that your eye is developing. Once you work long enough you will begin to see an improvement, and may even begin to think that you are becoming good. Then one day your eye will begin to develop more, and your progress will again look like shit.

The development of technique and the development of the eye, in a constant race with one another - one always pulling ahead only to be eclipsed -that is growth as an artist.

Good Luck.

Super late but it looked fun.

No scanner so I used my super ghetto camera phone.

I started getting frustrated as I couldn't get objects to "face" the right way...
