Gold is very soft and very dense, so it'll weigh your warriors down while offering comparatively little protection. I'd say, reserve it for ceremonial use!

I assume by "ceremonial use" you mean have an unarmed fish cleaner wear it while charging solo into a herd of undead yaks.

Yeah id rather an important/good fighter is using a masterwork steel over an artifact gold. Next time a dwarf gets a mood, checks his preferences. If ur dwarf had a preference for gold, and youve smelted a native gold rock in your fortress hes going to demmand gold no matter what. If he didnt have a preference for a metal, I would say when the mood strikes, go to your stock screen and forbid all metals bars except your best weapons grade material, hopefully steel. That way your helm will be steel not gold. Roughly speaking with regards to waepons grade material its copper>bronze=iron>steel>adamantite. There are exceptions.

Id get my baron or mayor to wear a gold artifact helm if I was not going to expose them to combat. I dont think this offers any benefit of any kind but id still do it.

Would be nice if you could put it on an armour stand to increase room value but I dont think you can.
