Topic.
I get the text that says it's working, with a "-1" next to it for about a quarter second before it just stops trying.
Materials are right there, I've tried eating, drinking and sleeping first.
Nothing.
edit: I know I'm meant to use the build function AGAIN after designating the location. No matter how many attempts I make, no results.
Allright, i already mentioned this in the other thread where you posted, but since you went and made a dedicated one, i'm going to get into details a bit more.
I'm going to assume that you already went and claimed a site. If you don't, it shouldn't change much, but that's how it worked for me.
So you are now in your shiny-brand-new fortress, maybe you already started planning a bit where you want everything, and you probably started building stuff with wood, killed a few critters and now you realize that you can't really get to the smelting business in any way. This will require some more or less extensive use of dfhack, depending on how much you want to make your life easier.
If you don't want to cheat too much, assuming you made sure to get an axe as your adventurer's weapon, you can just make a couple metal bars, use them to make a wood smelter to get some basic fuel, then make a smelter to forge an anvil and finally a smithy to make yourself a pickaxe.
Allright, we got there. You are now ready to mine.
Perhaps you are already happily striking the earth like any good dwarf should, and you are now looking at all those nice boulders, just waiting for you to be used. And so you just happen to think, why not make a mason's, so i can finally make some doors(dwarf needs some privacy afterall).
So there you are, you go and are ready to build it, the blueprint on the ground just waiting for you to press a button. And you press it, perhaps several times.
Maybe you went nuts with the free metal bars, and so you managed to build it, or, maybe, you had still some wood lying around (the horror!).
Or, more likely, you realize that there is something really wrong here.
Yep, you can't use any stone at all. Why is that you ask? I have no idea of the exact reason, but what happens is that all the stones are now marked as economic only, all of them. But worry not, dfhack can save the day once again (You are saving every once in a while, right?)
Go on and mode set to 0. And now you are probably thinking that i broke your game. Before you go on and decide to hold a grudge against me, save the game and reload. There, all better now.
You know what to do now...just go z, stone and reactivate the other rocks. Or everything if you want. When you are done, just use the same command like before and you can now finally build whatever you want.
I really wish there was a non-cheating way to do this honestly, but i guess this is good enough.
Apologies for the long wall of text, i had some fun while writing this.
tl;dr: create-items bars copper 10; make wood furnace; get fuel; make smelter; get anvil; make forge; get pick; mode set 0; save-reload; z->stone; get rocks usable again; mode set 1; save-reload; get FUN!
