Well, it's obviously because of tundra.
Same happens when you try to make offshore fortress.
And much like below ground, mud isn't needed as long as tile is soil.

If a plant has [BIOME:NOT_FREEZING] set in the raws, it simply won't grow in a freezing biome. All aboveground crops have this set by default, I think.

Please don't derail my lovely topic about undead with so many posts on agriculture, lads!

It turns out that region interactions is the adv worldgen parameter that controls whether an evil biome reanimates or not. Cranked the number up to eleven (actually 500 but you get the idea) in Seizurecrafted and there is so much fun to be had. Found a temple with a colossus who had slain over 20 peasants and all the skeletons keep reanimating and fighting him forever its glorious.

I'm also seeing wormy tendril everywhere, mixed with regular grass.

Anyobdy knows how to get other types of evil rain BESIDES blood?

It's random, but in my evil biome it rains yellow abhorrent slush, I'm afraid it may be a discoloured vomit.

One time I had a fort where it rained "green Abhorrent Ooze" or somesuch, it caused unconsciousness and bruising on contact. (I can only assume it was quite heavy.) Had to abandon when half a migrant wave died in the rain for some reason, I guess some things take a little getting used to.

You cannot plant in tundra. You can totally plant in freezing. Just not tundra, though nothing says why.

I have one that rains foetid muck. It's blue, and causes blisters.

Looks like juiced smurf everywhere.

Started it after learning that freezing biomes can't grow surface crops. It eventually became too much fun, when my dwarved started dieing of dehydration, and aising as zombies.

Had to scrub and restart the challenge elsewhere.
