Some units have 6 MOV, some 4 MOV, while all of them should have 5 MOV.
Maible somehow has WTA disadvantage against fellow mages.
Sakura has no WTA advantage versus anima mages. Similarily, Fezz suffers no WTA disadvantage versus anima mages.
Maible cannot wear Fire tome for some reason.
Also is there an actual difference in difficulty settings? I always play 'More Harder' and I wonder if the other one is easier.

It's not impossible to save Grifen and Fezz. You have to abuse FE movement rules. Same for the secret map.
Have Leo be close to their spawn by the time they get there.
Send Fezz 1 tile East of the mage. Send Grifen up into the forest. This will make the mage able to hit only Fezz.
If he doesn't crit (SAVE HERE), have Fezz go as far NW toward Leo as he can while Grifen's still able to heal him. Have Grifen heal up.
Now is the real hard part. By this point there are still enemies between you and Fezz, so you have to have you whole team helping out. If you did everything right, you should be able to get Fezz or Grifen or whoever was last hit by the mage to Leo for healing. Now Grifen and Leo can heal each other, and if you've got the Sara+Irene support, taking down the mage and brigand becomes easier.
I forgot about vulns. Erryone should have them. You can get vulns in the shop, but it is certainly possible to survive without them. Hover over EVERY SINGLE ENEMY's move routes before you move your characters. If you don't do this you won't survive, even with vulns. Calculate MT+STR-DEF just like you would in FEF2. Admittedly, crits are annoying, so save often.
I'll look into the weapon rank fix. I'm kind of surprised you were able to get it that high though.
Actually, it's not true that all units should have 5 MOV. In Sara's sheet, she originally had 4 MOV, while in Candy's, he started with 6. For most units I have tried to reproduce their original character sheet as closely as possible. So the MOVs should vary.
I have no idea why the WTA advantage thing is happening. Will fix. If you're having trouble with the first mage that attacks you on Chapter 1, make sure it can only hit Maible, as I'm pretty sure she can survive it. That's what I did.
Maible is Thunder Mage, not Mage. For some reason, they didn't have just a normal Mage, so I'll have to add that later.
There SHOULD be a difference in difficulty, but I've done some more playtesting, and it's not showing up.
Which means that you can get to the Secret Path on both difficulties.
