To be fair, it doesn't say anything about crossing impassable terrain in general, only water.  It could be ruled that, since levitation is still hindered by forests and mountains, it's basically hovering a few centimeters above the ground, in which case stepping off the edge of the platform only would let you drop until...well, until you're a few centimeters above the ground, give or take a little bit of "overshoot."

I also vote for insta-death cuz magic < plummeting velocity :P

Rescuing Julia will magically transform me into a sitting duck.

Not really behind that.

Hmm, well... Fezzina could move up Sheldon, he could take her vuln and move one up and heal Griff, and then Leona could move to Sheldon's former spot and heal him? I do have six move right now since Griff is down, if that helps plans at all.

But! What is good to remember, is that this is not impassable terrain. If it was, then shoot no dice.

However, the Gargoyles were flying over it. It stands to reason  then that mages can use magic to bridge the gap as, treating it as if it were like a pond or a river; both being terrain that normal units can't pass over. If only for a short time anyways. I agree that ending a turn over air as a mage would result in simultaneously putting into motion the terminal velocity that will end said mage's life. It's just like how mages can't swim. Robes are too heavy.

Fliers ignore terrain. That's not really the same thing.

I feel the need to vote against this as it would set bad precedent for the game I run.

Hrmm... I suppose the heart of the issue lies in that there really hasn't been this sort of situation before. Sky terrain is generally illogical, as very few maps are set in a place where there is a castle on a cloud. Chasms and other such cataclysmic events where there are fissures in the earth are more likely.

But I am going to hold firm on that they should be able to levitate the gap.

Here's how I see levitation: You have three basic types.

Brand A: The Link Archetype when he uses the hover boots. This is ideally how I imagine Mages using levitate, walking on air for a short time, then dropping. They can't go above anything, they just float above it. Cliffs still cause them pause, as they cannot magically walk over them.

Brand B: The "Floater" Archetype. They are constantly inches off the ground, usually as a mark of their magical superiority. They never leave the ground and plummet immediately when over a surface that isn't solid. If you are familiar with Kingdom Hearts, Sora's Final form is fond of this.

Brand C: The "I'm a witch" Archetype: Not content with Brand A or B, these characters defy gravity and spit down it's neck. They float around of their own volition like a nymph. Neither mountains nor valleys give them pause. Usually immaterial anyways like a ghost, so this makes sense.

Now, obviously Fire Emblem Mages are not of Brand C. That would be silly. However, so would them being of Brand B.

It's hard to imagine that the second they get into a combat zone that they would decide to suddenly start levitating. Regardless of the circumstance. That would require a gross misuse of magic sustained for a longer period of time than is reasonable. If you are focusing on floating in the air or suspended; you are a target. You are right in saying that they can't just ignore terrain. If in the current chapter of the Noble Emblem 2, I fully expect Colt to have to take a penalty when walking in the swamp. He may be able to move from place to place easier, but he can't sustain a levitation spell and fight at the same time. So he'll have to take the -10 to HIT and EVD.

That is why I think they can bridge the gap. They aren't constantly floating over the ground as suggested, rather they are using a technique similar to Brand A. They use tactical levitation to get across a gap, because they have limits. They cannot fly, this is true. But they can cross across something as if there is an even surface, if only for a time.

What about band D: Surface tension. Jesus and ninji used this to walk on water and soul reapers use it to walk on air. Dante can also do air tension, but only so long to double jump.

FE mages must use a small amount of magic to solidify the ground below, allow water, mud(rain) and sand, but forests and mountains are unaffected.

If you have Levitate then, yes, you are functionally a pegasus and may fly between the platforms.

Good thing I don't have any obligation to use your version of Levitate in FEF2 proper.

It's a dream world. Thus you can dreamfly. Except when you can't.

My work here is done.

This is all rather thematic when you think about it... Every one of the dream-selves will be able to participate in the last fight. Personally, I think that is really cool. ^.^

But now to work it out. Fezzina needs to go back and fetch Alyssa. Luckily, she hasn't been doing anything and will be able to lovingly cradle Alyssa in her arms and carry her across the gap. This will take two turns, tops. If she waits for Alyssa to play before taking her across the gap, Alyssa will be able let her move twice; which gives Fezzina nearly free reign of where Fezzina wants to drop her. At that time, I'll be up and at em' as well, so I can assist in moving people out of the way.

Plans!!

EDIT:

I also spy with my little eye a missing wall that let's Candy get onto the platform with Efa. Hotfoot it young man!

As a note, any unit (not mounted) can actually cross a river. It eats up five MOV though, and you must immediately move to an adjacent dry tile afterwards. [FEF Handbook 1.20; page 109]
