If I could control when I get busy with life, I'd hold onto that secret and sell it to people for top dollar. As is, I'm a broke college student who's failing at trying to juggle work, school, and free time.

Maybe somewhere in the middle. He does bad things (presumably pirate-related things) because he has convinced himself that they are the right things to do - regardless of whether they are or not.

Dunno if you've watched Avatar: The Last Airbender, but I'm personally imagining a situation like Jet: his desire to see the invaders driven out is so strong that he's willing to wipe out an unaffiliated village in order to do it, seeing the village as a necessary sacrifice.
