Since my character in the first game was a noble (though he wasn't intended to be, it just sorta happened), I figure the best way to avoid it this time is to have my character and her family be so lowly-ranked on the social hierarchy that they don't even have last names.

An interesting idea, I'd go with that if you want my opinion.

But yeah, of course people back then had last names. It's just that it often wasn't worth a damn to know unless you had some prestige, either being a land owner or a noble. People weren't dirt back then yah know, people still treated others well enough. :v
