Sonja Lutece is a 17 year old Masallan girl of relatively small stature, lithe yet completely ordinary in appearance. With tousled, curly dark hair and a tangible curiosity in her brown eyes, she seems almost childlike at first glance, yet her demeanour is careful, quiet, and around other people (especially males), tense.
Born to a Wynarian garrison soldier in the year 205, Sonja Lutece lived her first years in relative instability, looked down upon by the members of her mother’s corp as a child born out of wedlock and nary a father in sight. While Sonja’s mother spent all the time she could looking after her child, her duties brought her elsewhere, and Sonja was left in the care of a middle-aged apothecary named Olivia on the outskirts of the town - where for the most part, she was raised. In the year 208, Sonja’s mother was killed by a structural collapse, and Sonja was left with only the faintest of recollections of her mother’s memory, and a hairpin that had belonged to her.
With a spirit for adventure, Sonja would go on to spend her childhood exploring the copses, streams and seaside an afternoon’s walk from the town - always instructed by Olivia to fetch ingredients for her esoteric recipes, and always agreed to with a fervour. Sonja’s childhood was spent mostly in the solidarity of the wilds, plucking and gathering what she could find for the apothecary, bathing in streams and running with mirthful abandon through springy grass under her bare feet.
Sonja’s first magical display came one night in 221 while she was on an especially long fetch-errand east to the Garazan border, when marauders happened across Sonja’s camp and snatched her unawares. She was knocked out and thrown atop a horse, and came to sometime later that night bound and gagged on the grass, the marauders some metres away. In a fit of panic fuelled by a fear of what they planned to do with her, she struggled against her bonds. As the thugs took notice, she freed herself in a flash of fire and in the next moment she had darted away, weaving through the trees and wincing from her burns.
Managing to get back to Wynar, Sonja was greeted by a worried old Olivia, and was treated for her injuries, which had started to blister under Sonja’s clumsy care. Sonja admitted her newfound magical ability, but did not want to worry Olivia, so she left out the harrowing circumstances surrounding her discovery.
After recovering from her burns, Sonja stopped adventuring beyond eyeshot of the town. With some insistence from Olivia, she was instead introduced to a chirpy young mage named Rhea, and over the following year developed her magical ability. Rhea was pleased to see that Sonja was very well read and learned quickly, but Sonja’s heart was still outside and away from Wymar.
With little warning, she soon packed her few belongings and left behind a passing merchant caravan, staying just far enough away to discourage notice but close enough to assuage her fear of being cornered by bandits again.
