That could be an idea, with call magic spells you're sacrificing both range and HP for the infinite spells. Maybe instead of a blanket 'tome range,' perhaps just halved? So tome spells have a range of one, and and staff spells have a range of a quarter of your mag?

With healing spells, perhaps the damage dealt is half of what is healed? That may actually be a bit too much of a downside, but it would help curb those infinite loops, I think.

An idea might be to say that call magic spells are only half as effective, so the caster's MAG is effectively halved for all the spells. Yes, while you can indeed cast sleep without the staff, you're acting as if you have half your magic instead of if you had the full of it. I wouldn't suggest combining this with the further halved staff range with call magic (the first suggestion in this post), otherwise you have call magic range that is MAG*1/8 range, which may be overkill. Or perhaps keep it, it would greatly reduce the range of those spells, as well as their effectiveness.

Tile explanations and weather effects have been updated. It applies to all current and future FEF/NEF games.

Oh, yeah, NOW visibility is a thing when we don't have a Spy in this FEF. :V

Well, he did say all current, which includes FEF 1. You might get the chance still, maybe.

It took me a while to make out some darkness mechanic that wouldn't end with me changing 20-30 lit/dark tiles each time someone moves.

It's basically fog-of-war. This is acceptable.

I assume it applies to both sides, meaning enemy magi can't attack us until they bump into our spears?

Unless they have a spy as well or employ spotter-sniper tactics, as I'm sure we would in those conditions. Why have your mages bumble around when you can have the guy who can actually take a hit do it? Then have the mage snipe them from the darkness.

...Hm. Is someone revealed when they attack, and if so is it just for that turn in a sort of 'the attack came from there' kind of way?

*leers mournfully at Night tiles*

Haspen, I just want to point out that you should probably only use fog of war with small groups, or only a few turns at a time. You're going to have to be updating the map whenever someone moves, and actions will be coming in slower so people can see that, yes, Berick the Barbarian did see something when he moved, and we should probably kill it.

It took me a while to make out some darkness mechanic that wouldn't end with me changing 20-30 lit/dark tiles each time someone moves.

Explain this magic.

He he he. That's the point c:

Explain this magic.

Dark tiles stay dark - but the enemy sprites show up on tiles adjacent to PC's. This way I can handle map lighting and vision independently and with less hassle.

But most units have a sight range of 4, and Spies have 8. It's going to be hard for anyone to see anything if you do only adjacent spaces. I suppose you could just count on the players to determine where their vision ends and if they miscount it's their problem

Well then.

Four tiles sprite-sight into darkness it is. Then again don't count that night chapters will be common. One per game is more than enough.
