Bearded Dwarven Women: a compromise?
« on: August 19, 2013, 03:45:52 pm »

It's been a while since I heard talk of this. Perhaps those who favour bearded dwarven women have simply learned to modify their raws quietly and let the forum be. I think that is a shame.

And when I saw this, I needed to ask: Do you accept the The Braid Beard as a compromise?

That's ridiculous and silly, which means it's also very dwarven.

Lol! I guess that's an acceptable way for the unfortunate beardless woman to hide the shame of her naked chin.

I recall that creature_standard.txt has, under the FEMALE caste, all the lines for beards, but missing the brackets (so the file thinks they're comments and doesn't parse them). Then Toady left comments saying "These lines cause females to get beards, just add brackets."

So we already have a compromise. :P

With a beard like that, who wouldn't?

Real talk, this is how I imagine a dwarven man and woman standing side-by-side.

I watch too much anime. Are beardless dwarven women considered heresy against Armok?

Yep, that's what I do. There's little point debating it in the forum when Toady allows us to modify it easily. I do recall that some people get weirdly vehement about it.

It's... a fraught subject. When Toady separated out genders a few of us were shocked to see the dwarven women beardless. Things got heated, but eventually differences were quietly set aside when Toady supplied the means to easily change to bearded.

It's just old forum stuff, but some of us still remember. I like this solution better than adding in beards because it allows us all a shared canon. As opposed to all raw-modders being somehow outside of the purview of threetoe's stories and suchlike.

Are you suggesting that we all pretend that dwarven women grow their hair long and then braid it in front of their hairless faces in imitation of masculine beards? I kind of took this to be a light-hearted joke thread rather than an attempt to alter view points. It sounds odd to me. I don't care much about sharing a common canon with other players either, though.

Well, they could do this after wedding. In many cultures married women (and men) style their appearance differently from unmarried ones.

As for real beards, I'd add them just for the sake of it but most of the time I just don't bother with it because it's too damn insignificant in the game. You can't even notice it's there unless you dive right into the middle of wall'o'text.

For some reason this all reminded me of a short bit of dialogue from Deep Sounding about a dwarven girl about to shave her beard.
(The writer has allowed the book to be shared and distributed freely so I think that posting a quote from it should be ok.)

I would prefer dwarfs that pop out of holes in the ground then bearded dwarf women.

Bah, you hairless pansies.

Everyone knows that beards are a cave dwellers must, seeing as how they assist with cavern navigation.

Didn't your parents ever tell you this?

I always liked the tales of dwarves fishing with their beards, polishing floors with their beards, carrying their babies in their beards... you get the idea. The question for me wasn't so much underground navigation (though that's a good one, I like it).

Are you suggesting that we all pretend that dwarven women grow their hair long and then braid it in front of their hairless faces in imitation of masculine beards? Maybe not a joke, per se, but yeah the thread's intended pretty lightheartedly. I don't really expect to have any sway with it. But instead of editing in beards I may figure out how to edit braid beards into the hair descriptors. For my own personal amusement, if nothing else. Because yes, amusement is the main goal.
