“I’m gonna die… I’m gonna die.” Melody muttered to herself.

“Pssst.” Jeffrey hissed quietly as he tapped Clair on the shoulder taking her attention away from the gently murmuring Damon.

“Yeah? What is it mumbles?”

[I think this kid’s gonna die.]

“Tell me something I don’t know. She keeps saying it over and over. Fuckin’ wimp.”

[No, look at her. She’s basically already dead. If we don’t find some first aid soon…]

“What?”

[Well, we might have to put her down. I don’t want anyone suffering like that. A bullet is cleaner than getting ripped to shreds.]

“True. Hey Princess, Jeffrey says-“

Thankfully, for Jeffrey at least, a noise interrupted Clair’s harsh breaking of the news.

“FIRST AID!” Came the genuinely happy voice of Mark from a quiet room off to the side.

“What!?” Ugly Jim asked as he stepped away from a barricaded door he had seen. Rushing into the room he was treated with a gruesome sight. A severed arm holding onto a red package. Beside it sat a woman with a bullet wound in her chest, also gripping one of the important packages.

“First aid Jim!” Mark laughed aloud “I can’t believe I’m so glad to see a few dead people but they don’t need it! Let’s grab it quick before someone else comes along.”

“Seems kind of ghoulish but… We do need it more than they do. Can you imagine our luck Mark?” Jim whispered as he bent to pry the arm off of the first aid kit. “Not only are we getting close to the bus stop but everyone’s gonna make it! I’m sure of it.”

“Sweet healing powers!” Melody uttered to herself as she began patching up her wounds. The mere physicality of holding a health kit had boosted her mood.

“You gonna be okay kid?” Ugly Jim asked as he finished patching himself up “You got pretty messed up back there.”

“Yeah… I’ll be fine.” Melody snapped at the older man.

Ugly Jim was a little surprised at the venomous retort, though he felt he deserved it for being part of the reason she was in this condition in the first place “I really am sorry about shooting  you.”

“Huh? Oh… Yeah that… Don’t worry about it.”

“Is something bothering you kid?”

“Other than my entire family being dead and the whole group thinking I’m weak? No, nothing.”

“Well, I can’t say much about the first part other than I’m sorry for your loss. But for the second part, no one thinks you’re weak. You haven’t been with the group long. We’ve all had our moments of weakness, so we’re not going to judge you… Well, maybe not Ali who seems to be gliding through this infection like she’s in a ballet.”

Melody pondered that for a few moments before she said “Yeah, I guess you’re right. But… Still, I hate for people to see me like that.”

“Well…” Jim started but was cut off by Damon’s shouting.

“Spitter somewhere out here guys!” Damon, who had run ahead to scout, shouted down the hallway to his allies. Looking around he was in shock as to what had become of the city. The streets were covered in discarded trash and bodies. Cars and rubble littered the street. Even the air itself seemed to have died.  Only still air existed in this still city now. Still but for a small group of survivors.
