Two final rifle-shots was all it took to eliminate the horde. Jeffrey surveyed the damage. Easily over one hundred infected corpses littered the hallway. A thick slimy patch of Boomer Bile continued to spread on the floor near some of them. Looking to his allies he saw Ali rushing to aid some of the injured while Clair was searching around for more enemies.

Jeffrey himself took a quick listen and decided nothing was close enough to worry about. After all, the infected had some inborn desire to announce their presence. It had probably saved their life that they did. Still, no rushing feet or maniacal laughter or the sort was sounding. So the immediate threat was over. Now was time to see what the condition of his allies was.

Thankfully it didn’t seem to bad for Mark and Ugly Jim. The two looked pretty beat up but they would survive. Damon and Melody worried him however. Damon was barely holding onto consciousness it appeared from how little he was moving and Melody’s curses of anger and pain had faded swiftly to murmuring to someone to make it better. Jeffrey assumed it was her mother.

Jeffrey sighed as he then checked his weapon just in case things would get harsh again. ‘We’re done with that horde… But… We’re not out of the woods yet.’

“It’s weird.” Ali said as she observed Ugly Jim and Damon’s condition. “Less than… Two minutes ago we were laughing about how Boomer’s were basically worthless…. I guess… I guess we need to be more careful.”

Jeffrey simply nodded to her. Boomer’s had taken a large chalk-up in his threat assessment list. He only prayed that they never got biled while a Tank was nearby.

Great [weird] news everyone! I've assigned everyone without a last name a last name AND did neat little G-mod portraits of you guys!

Melody had never been in so much pain. Tears rushed down her dirty face as she whimpered incomprehensible things between her sobs. This was all just a nightmare. She'd wake up at home, in her own bed. Autumn would be asleep in her room with her teddy bear. Safe and sound. Mom would be almost home from the night shift at her job. She'd kiss Melody on the forehead and smile her tired, mournful smile.

"That's my baby girl." She would sigh before hugging her.

But deep inside, Melody knew it wasn't a dream. she knew it was real. Everyone she'd ever loved was dead and she was dying. Up until now, it was like a dream. But the pain brought her back to reality. But more than the bullet wounds, she felt the void in her heart and realized that no matter how many of the bastards she killed, she'd never get her family back. She'd never fill the void.

"Just let me die..." she protested weakly as she was gently pulled to her feet. She barely had energy to stand, let alone carry the heavy shotgun that Jeffery handed back to her.

“Come on Mark, you’ll be okay.” Ali said soothingly to Mark as she helped him to his feet. The younger man was quite a mess but he didn’t look too bad.

“Heh, how do I look?” Mark asked as he slowly stood up with her help.

“Better than Jim, Melody, and Damon.” Ali offered as a small consolation.

“Well… Ouch, I suppose I’ll have to accept it.” Mark said as he tenderly grabbed his M16 from the floor and tried to stretch some of the pain away. He instantly regretted it.

“Be careful!” Ali chided gently.

“So… How is Damon?”

“I don’t need your help.” The heard Damon say and turned to see him fighting against Clair’s less than gentle attempts to help him up.

“Yes, because you’re doing such a stand-up job on your own.”

“Hahahahahaha!” Damon shouted at her sarcastically as he attempted to get up on his own with her watching. “Um… I… Need your help.”

“What? You? Need MY help? Surely you jest. Worthless.” Clair taunted as she offered him a hand to help him up.

“Shut up.”

“I could leave you here.”

“By which I mean please help me up my beautiful friend.”

“That’s better.”

For Ugly Jim’s part he was feeling only a little worse than he usually did. At least this time he couldn’t remember getting shot by someone on his team. Unfortunately this brought to mind his own shooting of Melody.

“Don’t… Just let me die…” The girl in question sobbed as Jeffrey tried to pick her up. Similar to Damon she seemed to be fighting against her rescuer’s attempts.

“Come on girl, we need you.” Ugly Jim offered.

“So what? It’s all worthless anyway… We’re all gonna die. Mom’s dead. Autumn’s dead. Uncle Frank… Everyone. What’s the point?” She sobbed as she slowly got to her feet regardless of her feeble attempts to fight it.

“We need every hand we can get. What if we have to fight another big one? We’ll need you.” Ali offered from across the hall.

Melody didn’t reply to this but only feebly started standing. She still wasn’t feeling one hundred percent but she figured ‘I can at least help them…’

[I don't think some of these guys are going to be be able to survive another hit like that, so they should probably stay at the back with long ranged weapons, which will naturally put the rest of us at the front.]
