X-Com: bureau declassified
« on: August 19, 2013, 10:10:06 am »

X-COM: bureau launches at midnight.

I've got the preorder, looking forward to seeing how good it turns out.

I'm holding off to see if it's any good. If it's got enough strategy elements and it let you customize your team, I'll probably get it.

erm, as far as I know, it's Bureau: XCOM Declassified, could be wrong though. I'll wait and see how the game looks, maybe I'll pick it up after I come back from my holidays.

Good luck, brave game-o-naut. I'd be pleasantly surprised to have someone tell me this is worth getting.

Looking forward to hearing what you think. I so want to preorder it and get the discount and specials, but I have the SimCity preorder blues still.

^ This.

I don't like it when certain IPs are suddenly shoehorned into another genre. They tried to do it with X-Com: Interceptor and it was a relatively awful game, and they really should have just branded this something else.

Maybe something along the lines of... "Call of Duty: Old Time Aliens"

Just a thought...

First review is scathing: http://imgur.com/fD7Oi4y (found this on reddit since they killed the article)

Probably still time to cancel your preorders.

They should never have bothered trying to make Call of XCOM: Old Time Aliens - they should have just kept XCOM as a strategy title and tried to flesh it out. Going back in time isn't a bad thing, making a strategy title a shooter is.

What next? Civilization cover shooter? Crusader Kings FPS?

Did you just say Chivalry: Medieval Warfare/War of the Roses? Because it sounds like you did.

There's no attempt to add any sort of CK stuff to that, though! ;)

Wow, that review eviscerated it.

I can barely read it, with it being so blurry >.>

Less crappy version, courtesy of Reddit. It's an absolutely brutal assessment. Worth noting that the review was only released because Destructoid doesn't understand 12-hour clocks (review embargo is lifted at 9 PM, reviewers misread that as 9 AM). It's never a good sign when a publisher forces critics to withhold their reviews until after the game is released - it often means the game is terrible and they're hoping people will buy on launch day/preorder before reading the negative reviews.

Now, mind, the same Reddit thread pointed out that this reviewer gave a 6 to The Witcher 2, a 5 to Mario Kart 7, and a 9.5 to Modern Warfare 3. Take that as you will.

I am kind of sad... I really think a FPS Xcom game set in the 1950s could have worked as a sort of "Secret invasion" sort of deal with a strong focus on investigation and adaption. Where the weaponry isn't stolen alien tech but rather jury rigged gadgets made to take advantage of the alien's weaknesses that you discover in your investigations, often by fighting a losing fight.

Yet it seems they never REALLY wanted to make that game. They wanted Mass Effect.

I had pre-ordered it in good faith, but have just requested my refund. It seems like that just couldn't pull it off.

I think the basic idea would have sold fine (and likely better) if they'd just kept the vintage appeal and set it in the 20's-30's with some teslapunk trappings and given it a new name. I'd totally play a game like that and be excited for an untapped era for a new franchise if they made the gameplay compelling enough to stand on its own. Instead of, you know, trying to trick me into nostalgia.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.
