Dr. Branth wants early expanded coverage placed to maximize the chances of detecting UFOs where they will have greater chances of recovery.... that may not mean the Americas and I don't know where that does mean, Asia maybe?
Probably Central Mongolia. That's all land, and fairly populated too.

As we are flush with funds, I have decided to spend some of it. First by recruiting 2 new rookies:


"Delta Foxtrot" Guedes is a Mexican customs officer who has spent 5 years on the border crossing between UA and the Revolutionary nations. She should be well versed in dealing with illegal aliens.


Barry the Baptist is an army chaplain from South Africa, who unusually also has played a role in combat situations. Hopefully he will do more than hand out pamphlets about confessing sins to the Aliens.

As per Dr Branth’s request, as soon as the particle beam research is completed we shall begin analysis of the alien EM warfare gear. My main decision this morning though will please him greatly.

I have ordered the construction of a second base in central Asia. Over 60% of alien flights appear to originate to the east of our current HQ, and I would like to be able to offer some resistance to what the aliens have chosen as a preferred flight path. This second base will initially prioritize workshop space and another pair of fighter craft. In time I will order the relocation of our storage yard and the conversion of the workshops at HQ into extra lab space. I do not intend for this base to carry a strike team just yet (as our current dropship can reach anywhere on the globe, and we dont have enough combat veterans to justify a second team), though it will maintain a token security detail to protect it from alien incursion.

Construction of Headstand continues at pace, though it is still little more than a hole in the ground. It will be many, many weeks before it comes fully online.

Good news – the particle beam project is complete.

It is little more than a scaled down particle accelerator with a magnetic focussing array. The accelerator is no different to ones used in labs the world over - the magnetic focussing array though is decades ahead of what we have at our disposal. The beam itself ends up only several particles in diameter – a direct hit from one of these is going to punch through anything. It hits harder than our missiles, with more accuracy, but a limited range thanks to atmospheric effects. Even a near miss will shower the target with ionised molecules from the air – exactly what happened to Spaghetti-7 over the Ukraine. The device is electrically powered, and with some tweaks the generation systems on our craft can power them, though at a reduced rate of fire and power than the aliens. We can manufacture these if needs be, but due to the complex magnetic focussing system it will be costly and time consuming. If we can keep shooting down armed alien craft we should be able to repurpose any that can be salvaged from wreckage. As beam weapons become available from the deconstruction teams they will be fitted to replace the missile racks on our fighters.

Dr Branth is now enthusiastically dismantling one of the alien EMW sets. I hope what he finds is useful.

June 23rd 2084, 3.20AM
Fuck. From nowhere, we have picked up a Harvester heading directly at our base from the South – it has evaded detection until being as close as 5000 km. It is heading straight at the SAM umbrella – as soon as it enters firing range I shall order the interceptors to engage – we can not afford to let that craft land at our base and disembark troops.


4.00AM
The Arabia SAM site has opened fire, to minimal effect. Haspen and Birdy-51 are both scrambled to do what they can against the giant craft – they have orders to engage as soon as the Harvester passes into the range of our laser cannons.


4.40AM
Success. Against the odds, we have blown the Harvester clean out of the sky. Haspen and Birdy-51 were able to land a number of missile hits on it before passing into its firing range, which the lumbering Harvester could do nothing to avoid. These hits appeared to damage the already limited manoeuvrability of the craft, and SAM missiles and laser bursts started to strike home. Haspen and Birdy-51 closed in and took the craft down with concentrated laser fire on the Harvesters already damaged engines – Haspen scored the kill with a point blank hit on the Harvester with the particle beam the aliens have been so kind to lend us. We simply have to get more of those into service if they can bring down a Harvester. Haspen took a near miss from a burst of particle beam fire and his craft will need some serious repairs – the lower fuselage appears to have melted in places. The Harvester wreckage is sitting in a field near the Town of Ar’ar near the Northern border of Saudi Arabia. The assault team has been assembled and sent to retrieve the wreckage. Bringing down what appeared to be a direct assault on our base might be our greatest success of this war so far.

23rd June 2084, 5.45AM

The dropship reaches the crash site at dawn. There is no sign of any alien activity near the wrecked Harvester which contains a number of dead Taman, but a trail of chaos leads Tiruin to a nearby train station with aliens busy massacring civilians. The squad disembarks and gets ready for action.


Tiruin dusts off and carries out a quick flypast of the enemy positions.

The Taman soldiers are carrying what appear to be bulkier versions of the plasma weaponry we have already seen them use. With luck these weapons will be as inaccurate as the smaller pistols we have seen them use in the past. Note the differing uniform on the second - some indicator of rank maybe?

SSG dispatches the first distant alien with no fuss.

Kickingbottom peppers the alien holding the fucking huge gun with two accurate bursts of rifle fire – it seems to shrug these off with no ill effects.

Shadenight steps up to shoot it in the thigh to finish it off.

Immediate threats cleared, the squad spreads out to hunt more alien scum.


A Taman emerges from the railway tunnel and blasts apart a civilian with a single thin beam from one of the bulky guns. A second Taman heads up the street towards where Bruce is hiding, and blows a hole in the fence with a large glob of plasma from the same bulky gun – it appears it has multiple modes of fire. A Hoverdisc comes tearing up the slope towards Luke, stops just outside of flamethrower range and hits him with a plasma round in the torso – blood begins to pool on the ground around him. The sneaky bastards are learning.


Kickingbottom peppers the Taman that is hunting Bruce, again the rounds impacting on the body of the alien producing no visible effect.


It’s a good job Shadenight is on hand to back her up and rip a round through the ribcage of the advancing alien

Cognitive dissonance demonstrates the potential of the rocket launcher, sending a rocket into the tunnel wall just behind the most distant Taman, sending its corpse tumbling to the ground in some style.


Honker Bonker sprays automatic fire all over the Hovernet, and most of a magazine later it is full of enough holes to fall down dead.
This allows Luke to retreat to safety with Bruce on hand to try and stop him bleeding to death.

While Bruce plays at doctor again, the rest of the squad split into two 3-man teams – one will head towards the train station, one will head past the house ahead of our position.

As Krevsin approaches the train, he sports a lone Taman hanging around, salivating, unsure of what fruit to buy as a healthy snack between murderous rampages. Krevsin has no shot on this alien so takes cover behind a handy tree.



The alien breaks off his fruit related dilemma, and instead launches a barrage of large plasma bolts from his gun at Krevsin. The tree takes the worst of it, But Krevsin still nearly has all his upper body armour burnt off, and is losing a lot of blood.

Nobody is close enough to help him directly yet, so SSG lobs a smoke grenade to obscure the aliens view of Krevsin. This will buy him some time, but not a lot. Honker Bonker sprints over to try and tend to his wound – his idea to carry an extra med pack is paying off.


Ignoring the two soldiers hidden in the thick smoke, the Alien continues its advance, hitting SSG square in the chest with a single plasma round, blowing a neat circular hole in his armour and causing the by now compulsory torso burns and bleeding. The weapon it is carrying seems to be able to fire accurate single rounds or full auto bursts of plasma – it puts our assault rifle to shame.

Enraged, SSG engages in an exchange of fire with the alien, but his sniper rifle proves the more accurate of the two weapons and the Taman is killed. SSG is in a bad way though, his ribs visible through the molten mess of meat and armour.

A sweep of the area reveals no further aliens. 4 civilians were found hiding in amongst the houses, with one dead civilian near the tunnel mouth.
Again, our sniping skills saved the day here – the bulky alien plasma rifle is a terrifying weapon – accurate and with one hell of a punch. Full auto fire from medium range or less will kill our soldiers with ease – I am emphasising to our soldiers the need to engage the aliens at maximum range. If we had not thinned out their numbers early in combat we would have been in for a hard time. As it stands, we have 3 more troops in the medbay with a mess where their chests should be.

For his bravery in putting himself directly in harm’s way in taking down the Hovernet, and in sprinting over open ground to aid a comrade, Honker Bonker has been promoted to Lance-Corporal.

Scriver, Barry the Baptist and MaxClone have been rotated into the squad to replace the wounded. Scriver has been issued with a HMG following the disappointing performance of our assault rifle compared to the alien plasma rifle.


The salvaged plasma rifle and the odd and bulky plasma blaster have been deposited to the lab for evaluation – once someone can get Dr Branth’s attention off the alien EMW setup.

With the arrival of some serious alien weaponry in this war in the form of these 2 new plasma weapons, I really worry that the casualties will soon begin to mount up.

This occurs some point between when the Harvester was downed near our base and before our dropship reaches the crash site.

Dr. Branth sat before a bank of computer monitors, joystick in hand.  The screens display fields of view from several stationary cameras and others mounted upon a half dozen robotic units, which Dr. Branth controls with the joystick and a nearby keyboard.  He concentrates on the dismantling of the 'mystery sensing device', if sensing is actually its purpose, work being performed in a heavily shielded room a slight distance from the monitor bank.

A knock at the open door beside him brings rage to his eyes, and a curt "Yes," is his answer.

"Dr. Branth," his assistant answers in a glad voice, "The Harvester class craft that was heading towards base has been successfully intercepted and they managed to bring it down before it could land.  No casualties, not even any property damage on our side this time.  And the debris are retrievable, and should be here soon.  Almost fell in our back yard."

Dr. Branth's hand drops from the joystick, and his level glare turns from a monitor to stare at the assistant. "Miss Briggs.  Am I to understand that the craft continued its direct flight towards this very base?"

"Yes sir," the woman answers.

"And this threat is now ended, without any need to slow or stop my work.  Which leads me to wonder, are you on their side?"

The assistant blanches, staring at Dr. Branth with distress.  She doesn't answer and he continues, maintaining the glare as he speaks:

"The craft was undetected until it was well within our normal detection range.  Does this suggest to you that they indeed do know where this base is located, and have means to possibly slip past our detection equipment?"

Miss Briggs nods jerkily, still appearing shocked and worried as she watches Dr. Branth.

"Then I would suggest not interrupting this work again.  It 'may' lead us to a means to improve our detection of these craft.  It 'may' inform us of how specifically they are able to locate, and what we must do to confuse or confound their detection.  It 'may' allow us to access their communications.  But the only thing which your interruptions 'may' bring is a waste of my time and delay to this vital work."

He raises one hand to point a single finger directly at her.  "I do not care to hear your voice again until this project is finished.  I do not care if the aliens land at this very base, their attention at this time suggests the possibility that they are aware of our communications and know the very research we currently conduct.  This only increases the likelihood that this research is indeed critical for our defense efforts."

Dr. Branth lets his hand drop, and his attention returns to the bank of monitors, his gaze sweeping screen after screen as he dismissively concludes, "Even if they reach the base, Miss Briggs, and even if our defenses are breached and all is lost.  Even then, Miss Briggs, it would be better to allow me to work undisturbed until the very last moment.  Let the aliens themselves interrupt me, rather than your rude presence, if I absolutely must be interrupted.  When this work is finished, we will discuss this further, if needed.  Now, if I may return to my urgent and vital examination without further delay?"

His assistant turns from the doorway, tears shimmering in her eyes as she hurries towards the nearest rest rooms, where she can cry in peace and recover her composure.  Dr. Branth already holds the joystick again, his focus seeming nearly absolute as he watches the monitors shows what the dismantling reveals from every possible angle.

A second fighter craft has been disassembled. Its particle beam is being fitted to Haspen’s craft. We now have enough alien alloy to produce 3 complete sets of armour panels for our aircraft. I order production to start immediately.

25th June 2084, 3.20PM


An alien scout craft has been spotted to the east. Birdy-51 is dispatched to take it down and get some valuable combat experience. He shoots it down from close range over the Caspian Sea. No great loss – we have 2 Harvesters to deconstruct in storage and a research backlog.

27th June 2084, 7.30AM
Research into the alien electronic warfare suite is finished. Here are the main findings of the project:


1) We have been able to decipher from the alien units the frequencies used by the aliens to jam our targeting mechanisms. Alas, this will not allow us to hit their craft at will. There are a large number of frequencies used, combined in a complex manner – there are several billion possible jamming signals. These are governed by an intelligent computer system that reacts and adapts to any and all targeting efforts to determine the most optimal means of misdirecting hostile actions.

2) The unit is capable of projecting any region of the EM spectrum at high power levels. If needed to, the unit can project false heat shadows many meters away from its craft, or lay fake gamma ray trails in its wake.

3) The unit has an ability to directly access hostile targeting apparatus and paint decoy images into targeting systems, as and when the system determines it suitable to do so.

For fairly obvious reasons the unit does not directly interface with our craft. However, the lab team has been able to write a number of software systems that act as a go between, translating from our crafts management systems into the alien EW unit, and back again. I am told that the software is a mess and a total hack, but it seems to work.

As the unit is basically an advanced application of known technologies we will have no trouble in manufacturing these, should they prove tricky to obtain by traditional means of taking them from the carcasses of recovered craft. We will replace our own ECM gear with the alien apparatus as we obtain them.

The labs have been ordered to analyse the alien plasma rifle – I want these in the hands of our troops as soon as possible to replace our poorly performing assault rifles.

1st July 2084, Midnight
We seem to be doing too good a job in protecting the Earth. Our funding this month comes to a paltry 385,000 Cr, as the nations of the world don’t seem to understand the nature of the threat we are facing.

2nd July 2084, 3.20AM
Dr Branth has prepared a detailed guide to the plasma rifle obtained in Saudi Arabia.

1) There is no doubt that the rifle is a weapon designed for war – it is essentially an up scaled version of the by now well understood plasma pistol. It is bulky, but no heavier than our own rifles. The plasma it produces is 20% hotter than in the pistol, and the plastic containment globules are significantly thicker, giving the rifle an effective range of around 100m, short for a general purpose rifle, but ideal for urban infantry engagements.

2) The rifle launches the plasma at twice the velocity than the pistol. The projectiles burst before they drop due to gravity, and are too massive to be blown off course like in the pistol. This makes the rifle accurate even at its maximum range.

3) The rifle fires highly accurate single bursts, or fully automatic barrages at 180 shots per min. This sounds modest, but 4 or 5 plasma projectiles hitting an organic target in quick succession will kill it – no questions asked. 2 or 3 hits in succession is enough to blow through our armour (which had performed well against the plasma pistol) and clean through its wearer, and out the other side. Fully automatic fire produces a huge amount of recoil, limiting the accuracy of automatic fire.

4) The rifle is fed by a magazine identical in nature to the plasma pistol, simply larger to cope with the increased energy, plasma and plastic requirements for the weapon. We can manufacture both the rifles and magazines, but should be able to scavenge plenty of these from the battlefield.

Analysis: This weapon has worrying implications. Clearly the aliens understand war very well, and come here with it in mind. We should turn it back on them as it represents a significant improvement on our general purpose rifles.

Kickingbottom has been issued with our only functional plasma rifle - hopefully it will allow her to kill what she shoots at. We could really do with scavenging some ammo for it as our workshops are currently busy with the aircraft plating.

I have requested the same level of detail of analysis for the larger plasma blaster weapon.

4th July 2084, 4.40PM
We are receiving reports of alien activity at a solar power plant on the shores of the Caspian Sea. This must have been the target of the flypast performed by the scout shot down by Birdy-51. Why the aliens are interested in solar power generation when they have a mastery of antimatter is beyond me – still, I sure as hell am not going to let them get away with an un-harassed landing. The alarm is sounded and the dropship speeds off over the horizon...

Hm.

Tiruin pondered as she sat in the pilot's seat. The Firebird was cruising steadily towards the coordinates set on the map, but plenty was on her mind. Plenty to preferably ask Command once this mission was done.

Transports should at least be armed for combat, if in case of emergency. I'm unsure on the specs on this beauty, but then taking an aviator's role wasn't my primary decision in the first place. However, if we are at least armed, then this means we've automatic clearance to engage UFOs in flight--just to speed us along the way before the Stilettos get to it, possibly.

Though I'm quite against protocol. We're trained to use the SHIVA armament to its full capacity, yet not provide ground support? Hm. Something to think on..but then there's also the fact that while this craft is made for transport and world-class flights, it still has space aboard the lateral parts for those technical equipment I saw earlier.

...I wonder if this could be outfitted with the RAVEN someday. Or is it already installed? I just hope I don't see battle before I'm sure.


She handled the in-ship radio.
