Hooray, I'm active again! Also, I want a rocket launcher! Why does Cog get one when I don't? [/whine]

You are not strong enough to carry one yet, nor are you strong enough to carry a grenade launcher.

June 14th 2084, 8.15PM
A Harvester has been spotted heading SE over central Europe towards the alps. Both interceptors are scrambled to shadow it.

Alas, it pulls away out of radar range. Any moment now I am expecting some kind of message informing me that one of our cities is under attack and that we have to go and save the day...

June 15th 2084, 1.00PM
Disassembly of the first fighter is complete. Along with enough alien alloy to make 3 complete sets of aircraft armour, 4 very interesting components have been salvaged:

1) Some kind of astronavigation system. Whilst it lacks a star chart, it will allow us to decipher the alien astronomical notation system and our first real insights into their interstellar navigation.

2) An advanced detection suite consisting of radar, lidar, passive and active sonar, UV and IR sensors, microwave detection and magnetic sensors, along with some kind of mystery sensing device.

3) The already mentioned beam weapon, which fires some kind of particle stream at light speed. This item will be a research priority.

4) An advanced ECM/ECCM device which makes ours look frankly embarrassing. This will be evaluated as soon as practical.

EuchreJack has had her Swiss cheese torso mended once again and is back on duty.

June 16th 2084, 1.00AM

The spider autopsy is complete. The lab boys have taken to calling it the Bloodspider, based on some disgusting findings. They are rushing straight back to the labs to being work on the particle  beam weapon following debriefing me on their findings:

1) This device is a true robot with no organic parts. The large body houses the processing units and power cells. The 8 legs are powered by advanced servomotors allowing it easy movement over rough terrain.

2) It has no ranged weapons, but is equipped with exceptionally tough blades formed from the now familiar alien alloy as “mandibles”. Statements from the witnesses of the Nigeria attack claim that they use these blades to cut up human victims. This is supported by the gruesome discovery of neat chunks of human flesh stored in a compartment inside the head of one of the wrecked spiders.

3) The body of the spider is some kind of carbon weave reinforced with a thin layer of alien alloy. It is resistant to electricity and heat, but brittle and vulnerable to armour piercing rounds. The blades and legs are very vulnerable to explosive ordinance.

Analysis: A low risk combat unit as we should be able to easily neutralize them before they get into melee range. They will present a risk to civilians in populated areas.

Dorf me up. Arm with whatever you can scrounge up, so long as I get to kill or be killed by the alien menace.

Commander, when you have a moment, please?

Dr. Branth has requested that I speak with you regarding the 'mystery sensing device' which was recently recovered from the alien fightercraft.

Communication is an essential component of every form of warfare known to man.  Collection, control of, and the selective transmission of information has, along with the courage of the men who put their lives on the lines and sufficient funding for research and equipment, been the greatest factors in preserving the lives of personnel and civilians as well as a prime determinant of the victorious side in most minor and major wars.

One of the greatest and most vital holes in our understanding of this alien threat is if, and if so how, these ships are communicating with each other and their chain of command should they have one.  Several of your reports have mentioned the apparent lack of a means for communication, and this gap in our understanding is one of several primary concerns for our labs.

The same technologies and types of energy used for advanced detection are also frequently used in communication and often serve direct combat applications as well.  Radio waves, for example, are not only useful as a well known means of communication, but are also the modality of detection used in radar, and have applications of direct and indirect destructive capacity in certain types of electromagnetic weapons as well.

There is a high probability that research dedicated to understanding this alien fightercraft's atypical 'mystery sensing device' will identify their means of communication which has been and remains to this moment undetected.  Once this identification has been made, numerous new alternatives should become available to us, many of which should be extremely low cost to implement, including passive interception of alien communications allowing our existing forces to be most effectively deployed and better forewarned of the number and nature of the specific threats being faced in each new encounter.

Understanding of this 'mystery sensing device' will, at an absolute minimum, allow us to ensure that our hidden resources actually are hidden from alien methods of detection.  A night-time game of tag is a very different game if some of the players are using only their natural senses while others have infrared goggles and motion sensors.  It is vital that we ensure we have equal or better detection capacity than our enemies do, or we could lose our ability to continue to fight at any moment and never understand how we were so easily discovered and defeated.

To this end, Dr. Branth requests that funding and space be provided to evaluate this 'mystery sensing device' immediately, as well as maintaining or increasing funding for the existing projects which have and continue to reveal information and materials of incalculable value for both military and civilian purposes.

Thank you.

Well, in honor of Sarah Palin, I just set up my base in Alaska, so this should be interesting!

I'm also pleasantly surprised with how much thought and detail they poured into the weaponry and the history of the world. It's rather astounding really.

You should update this LP to the latest build, if you haven't already, as it boosts soldier skill and attribute development.

Rumor has it that EuchreJack's new uniform involves a bullseye on the torso armor.

Have we laid the groundwork for a second base yet?  We really need more coverage if we want to maintain funding.

So everyone, where should we place our second base?

I'd say America.
One in the continent and one in the 'new' states.

Dr. Branth wants early expanded coverage placed to maximize the chances of detecting UFOs where they will have greater chances of recovery.... that may not mean the Americas and I don't know where that does mean, Asia maybe?
