2nd June 2084, 8.20AM

Disassembly of the damaged Hovernet remains is complete.

Spoiler: One Hovernet, to go (click to show/hide)

Our initial assessment of this alien was wrong – it is not, strictly speaking, a robot. In the lightly armoured core at the hub of the Hovernet is a small biological processing unit. It is not really a brain, as it seems only equipped with the ability to process sensory input rather than more complex mental functions, but it is enough for the Hovernet to closely co-ordinate with other aliens on the battlefield.

How the device hovers is a mystery – it appears that some kind catastrophic failure of the system responsible for its flight is a common feature amongst “dead” Hovernets. Whatever mechanism it uses must be powerful, as the Hovernet is a very heavy object capable of moving at high speeds. Mounted in the hub is a weapon nigh on identical to the plasma pistols we have seen the Taman using in combat, though only able to fire single rounds rather than the multiple bursts the Taman seem to prefer – the light weapon, minimal armour and high speed of the Hovernet suggest it is designed as some kind of scouting unit intended to locate opposing combat units rather than engage them directly.

Analysis: Despite its high speed, the Hovernet is a relatively low threat combat unit which should still be neutralized on sight to interdict the enemies tactical capabilities.

The lab team are now making a full assessment of the Fighter craft before the engineering team are given the go ahead to begin dismantling it.

The large UFO recovered from Nigeria has made it to the UFO yard. The engineers are calling it the “Harvester”... why, I do not know. It too will be analysed before deconstruction.

SSG is released from hospital – his wounds were only superficial and only required a remedial dressing.

3rd June 2084, 7.00AM

A single fighter class UFO has been spotted on radar over Lithuania. Haspen and Spaghetti-7 are scrambled to bring it down. The UFO’s flight path will bring it directly into our SAM umbrella on a course directly towards our base. I fully intend to blow it out of the sky before it gets anywhere near us – the interception point it predicted t be over the Ukraine.

This craft puts up far more of a fight than any we have engaged so far. Spaghetti-7 is shot down by some kind of energy weapon employed by the fighter craft – the burning wreckage of his craft slams into the Ukrainian countryside and he is killed instantly. Before the UFO can target Haspen, a volley of fire from the Russian SAM site blows apart one of its engines and it spirals into the ground into the suburbs around Kiev.

Tiruin powers up the dropship – the squad, one soldier down due to injuries, swear vengeance for thier fallen comrade. We really need some more recruits.

Spoiler: Downtown Kiev (click to show/hide)

It is a bright summers evening in Kiev. The squad disembark a short distance from the location of the alien disturbance, and set up a defensive position in a house near a park and small commercial unit. A Hovernet on lookout duty gives away the alien position – they appear to be taking refuge in the apartment building to the north east. The squad splits onto 3 groups – the snipers of SSG, Shadenight and EuchreJack, who take up positions in the house form one team, Honker Bonker and Krevsin flank around the house to the right, with Bruce and Cognitive Dissonance crossing the road to attack the aliens through the nearby park.

EuchreJack fails in an effort to take down the Hoverdisc on the roof...

Spoiler: The spotter... (click to show/hide)

SSG makes no such mistake in killing a Taman in front of the building.

Spoiler: Spot this! (click to show/hide)

The flanking elements continue the advance, as 2 Taman leave the building and head towards our positions, no doubt guided by the Hoverdisc.

In response to our opening shots the aliens spatter our house with ineffectual long range plasma fire, before something not so good happens.

Spoiler: Suprise! (click to show/hide)

Without warning, a Hovernet suddenly pops up in the window in front of EuchreJack, shoots from point blank range and blasts a large wound in her torso. She is able to return fire and the sniper round obliterates the disc, but she is in a bad way – Bruce is holding our only med pack and he is a long way away. EuchreJack retreats into the house to await treatment.

SSG sends a round through the Hovernet up on the roof, ridding us of one big nuisance.

Firing from upstairs in the house, Shadenight makes an uncharacteristic miss on another Taman (there seem to be many of them here...) in the car park in front of the apartment block.

Honker Bonker and Krevsin continue their advance along the right flank.

Spoiler: Dead civvie (click to show/hide)

Ignoring the sniper fire, the Taman kills a civilian before taking cover behind a low wall. A Hovernet rushes to join it, dropping off a balcony.

Shadenight doesn’t miss twice and rips a new hole in the Taman’s chest, and Cognitive Dissonance drops a grenade onto the disc, blowing it to bits.

Showing no self preservation, a Taman drops from the balcony, hits Honker Bonker in the chest from long range, and then rushes up to him. Honker Bonker bellows out in pain before doing what he does best – setting it on fire.

Spoiler: Mid-burning (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Post-burning (click to show/hide)

That was the last alien – thankfully, as the wounds are now mounting up. If the aliens bring any bigger weapons to the party, we could be in real trouble.

In the apartment building, we find 6 dead civilians. 2 were found hiding in the house we used as cover.  EuchreJack will head back to the medbay for another extended stay, but Honker Bonkers wounds are not too bad and he will be back on duty soon.

This mission showed a new tactic from the aliens – using a Hovernet as a spotter to guide troops to our position. It is a shame for them that we had such a strong sniping position to use to our advantage. 6 dead aliens bear testament to the usefulness of our snipers and their rifles. I am of the opinion that we have the upper hand in any engagement, provided we can keep the aliens at range - thier weapons are very innacurate, and no match for sniper fire. If we let them get close, we will suffer more casualties.

SSG is promoted to Lance-Corporal as a result of a solid combat performance. Continued high standards see Shadenight promoted to Corporal.

Spoiler: Corporal Shadenight (click to show/hide)

A new interceptor and pilot have been brought in to replace Spaghetti 7: Birdy-51. His craft will be combat ready in 2 days.

Passing through the infirmary doors, Shadenights laughs out loud.
"AHAHAHAHA Really? That's what she said!"
"Please, someone knock him out," a nurse whispers to another. "If he tries another 'charred' joke I'll wring his neck."
"Why do the aliens always take the nice ones and leave us the assholes?"
"Ehi guys!" Shade yells entering the infirmary, "Guess who got promoted to Corporal now? Yep! That's me! And don't worry Euchre, i'm sure they'll give you some nice new silicone prosthetics! You look a bit pale...want some sun?"
chuckling, Shadenight salutes, "Well guys, once more I'll be with fun new rookies while you lot sleep with your asses on the hospital beds. Do try not to get wounded next time...really, leaving me with only rookies will kill me before long...but maybe not, cause i'm awesome that way!"
"Get well soon!"
and then he leaves.
Whistling and slapping a nurse's ass on his way out.
"Why can't an alien kidnap him?" said nurse mutters.
"They'd give him back probably," the other mutters. "Something like 'Defective Product of Human Race. Please let us Kidnap another'."

Could you give Honker a smg instead of the flamethrower and take off the armor? It will be more dorfy and probably more effective  this way ;) He could carry the second healthpack and still get the TU bonus which means MORE DAKKA.

I can give him an SMG and a medpack and still have room for armour, and he wil sill have enough TU's to empty a magazine in one turn.

June 3rd 2084, 1PM

To bolster our wounded troops, Evonne Kickingbottom Suzuki has been drafted into duty. She is a French lady with Japanese ancestry who scored well for a rookie in our rifle examination.

A recent visit to the medbay provided me with a startling insight from Honker Bonker – having one med pack on a combat mission is asking for trouble. To this end he has volunteered to exchange his flamethrower for a SMG and add a med pack to his combat loadout.

A review of squad gear identifies that Cognitive Dissonance has developed enough strength to carry a rocket launcher into combat, and a single spare missile. May he use it well.

Spoiler: Pimp my UFO (click to show/hide)

The lab has finished its analysis of the fighter UFO. Their main findings are:

1) Whilst the craft is faster than a scout thanks to its larger engines, it is heavier and less manoeuvrable.

2) The craft mounts a single beam weapon under the nose. This weapon will require further investigation once our engineers successfully remove one from the craft in our storage yard.

3) Like the craft, the scout lacks any kind of comms gear. It does appear to have some kind of advanced detection and targeting apparatus which supports a “strike craft” hypothesis. This is further backed up by an absence of landing gear – this craft is not meant to land on the surface

4) The cockpit sits 2 Taman, presumably pilots, and the hold area contains working space for around 3 further aliens, with controls for the engines and weapon systems in the hold area.

5) The speed of these smaller UFO’s seems not to be determined by their engines – instead the limiting factor seems to be fuel. The fighter, like the scout, has a tiny fuel tank which restricts the crafts speed if it wishes to stay in atmosphere for any duration.
Analysis: This craft presents a real threat to our aircraft. It has proven to be deadly in one engagement. However, its limited mission profile will restrict the aliens’ use of this craft.

The labs are now performing an analysis of the large “Harvester” craft – I predict we will learn much from it.

June 13th 2084, 2.20PM

Analysis of the Harvester is complete. Below are the main findings of the lab teams:

1)  This craft seems designed to ferry an alien combat team to the surface of the Earth. It has several sturdy legs for landing on, and a set of engines in its underbelly which provide it with a VTOL capability. A large airlock in the rear of the craft allows for large numbers of aliens to be disembarked at once.

2) There appears to be storage areas on a lower deck of the craft for biological material – this is worrying.

3) Towards the front of the lower deck are two rooms – one for engine management, and one apparently devoted to targeting and navigation. The craft is equipped with three forward facing particle beams, similar to those seen on the fighter craft. This is a formidable armament, but not as large as I was expecting on a craft of this size.

4) The craft is capable of impressive speeds despite its mass thanks to quite frankly huge engines, and two antimatter fuel tanks that dwarf those in the smaller craft seen so far.

5) The upper deck houses a piloting bay with 2 of the familiar Taman seats, and enough living space for as many as 10 further aliens. Again, there is no comms gear, and the same advanced EM warfare gear as seen on the smaller craft.

6) The craft is ridiculously heavy – it is armoured beyond what our current weapons can damage meaningfully. This does mean that this craft has little in the way of manoeuvrability, so it will take hits from our SAM sites if it strays close to them.

Analysis: Primarily a dropship for alien ground forces, but also a dangerous aerial opponent. Recommended action is not to engage in the air unless the situation is tactically advantageous.

Honker Bonker, Scriver, Luke and MaxClone alpha have all been discharged from medical care and will be resuming duties shortly.

From what we have seen of the alien craft so far, Dr Branth feels able to draw the bits and pieces into some coherent theory regarding the aliens strategy here on Earth. Before he is allowed to spend time on such wild guesses I have ordered the dismantling of the damaged spider robots obtained in Nigeria.
