4th July 2084, 7.25PMAll 3 wounded troops have been discharged from the medbay and are back on the duty roster.
Aqtau, Kazakhstan. The solar power plant sits outside of the city of Aqtau, in a bare rocky plain. It is twilight by the time the dropship arrives.
As Tiruin guides the Firebird to a soft landing on a convenient landing pad, it becomes clear that there is no alien activity on the surface. The squad will have to storm the underground structure. MaxClone, Barry, Bruce, Honker Bonker and Kickingbottom assume forward positions. Shadenight, Cognitive Dissonance, and Scriver hang back to offer what support they can – their weapons are not best suited to a close quarters fight.
The forward element of the squad prepare themselves by the blast door, ready to burst through as soon as Bruce gives the word...
GO GO GO!
MaxClone is first through the door. He confirms that the corridor to the left is clear and takes cover in the control room across from the entrance. Barry follows close behind, and spots an unknown but UGLY alien creature in a room at the extreme right end of the corridor. He is far too far away for Barry to hit, so Barry also takes cover in the control room.
Kickingbottom and Honker Bonker head along the right hand corridor to deal with the distant alien, covering behind a wrecked forklift. Bruce and Scriver hold by the door, with Shadenight and Cognitive Dissonance bringing up the rear.
From the left, another of the ugly reptilian creatures emerges, carrying a plasma blaster. He sends a glob of plasma thudding into the door in front of Max. The alien to the right sends a single plasma round way over the heads of Kickingbottom and Honker Bonker.
In one smooth motion, Scriver swings out the door, and slams a long burst of automatic fire into the left hand alien. A large number of rounds rip into its chest, jerking it about as it dies in a shower of lead.
Kickingbottom takes care of the right hand alien with a short burst of automatic plasma fire. The un-armoured alien never stood a chance – its torso is melted apart from 2 or 3 plasma rounds. They may have mastered FTL travel, but they seem to have no concept of infantry armour.
With the corridors clear, the squad spits into two 4-man teams to sweep the base. MaxClone, Bruce, Scriver and Shadenight head left, with Kickingbottom, Honker Bonker, Barry and Cognitive Dissonance heading right.
The fuckers were waiting for us!
Shadenight, come in Shadenight...
The left hand team makes first contact with the enemy – 2 aliens spring around the corner just as the left hand team beings its cautious advance. An accurate plasma fire from a Taman and one of the new aliens slams into the chest and face of Shadenight who is killed instantly – the plasma splashes over MaxClone who receives burns to his arms. The loss of our top sniper is a blow to our combat effectiveness.
Scriver returns fire, wounding the lizard that killed Shadenight. MaxClone opens up with his plasma pistol, but hits a quite spectacular amount of nothing. Bruce, ever the calm one, drops a smoke grenade to provide some cover and proceeds to try and treat MaxClone’s wound. Sensing a need for some explosions to even the score Cognitive Dissonance heads to join the left flank. The right hand team continues its advance.
Bruce stops the bleeding in MaxClone’s arms with a small dose of coagulant spray. The clone is eager to continue fighting, and advances to the edge of the smoke cloud – however the two aliens are nowhere to be seen. Scriver joins him at the edge of the cloud, finding the prone and lifeless form of the lizard creature he wounded earlier – the Taman remains elusive.
Bruce just checking the guy with no face is actually dead.
The left hand team continue the advance, but the Taman remains hidden.
The right hand team round the 90 degree bend in the tunnel, and find no enemy presence...
Then, without warning, the Aliens make their move. A reptile and a Taman rush towards the left hand team – MaxClone takes a point blank plasma blast and bleeds out.
Here they come...
This is the wound that kills him...
Just before MaxClone bleeds out
Another Taman rushes the right hand team, but suppressive fire from Kickingbottom and Honker Bonker take it down without danger.
Following this exchange of fire, Bruce extracts some vengeance by blasting the guts out of one of the reptilian aliens.
Not to be outdone, Scriver spatters the blood of the Taman who killed Shadenight all over the walls of the corridor.
Imminent threats dealt with, the advance continues. The left hand team make it to their 90 degree corner.
The right hand team are nearly at the end of their corridor, and it looks like they will have to clear the area room by room.
Bruce rounds the corner, spotting a lone alien reptile at the far end – out of range of his shotgun, and there would not be enough time for his squad mates to round the corner, fire, and retreat to safety. Instead they lie in ambush...
Bruce's grenades make no difference, then...
Scriver gets blasted.
CD misses the alien badly...
and it skips behind CD, and shoots him in the back!
This does not go to plan. 2 frag grenades from Bruce are shrugged off by the alien, who returns fire which just misses. Scriver opens fire, but the alien his him full in the chest with a plasma glob, killing him instantly. Cognitive Dissonance drops the rocket launcher and rushes to help with his plasma pistol but misses with his shots. The alien rushes behind Cognitive Dissonance, and from point blank range melts a hole in his torso, killing him.
Somewhat shaken by seeing everyone die around him, Bruce does what anyone would in that situation – murder the alien scum.
Area secure.
An intact Harvester was recovered not far from the combat site. This is a somewhat Pyrrhic victory though. 3 good men and a useful clone are dead, testament to the close range power of the aliens’ plasma weaponry. We simply cannot afford 50% losses, and will need to recruit new soldiers instantly – I hope I get some good quality volunteers to replace the dead. A second clone is apparently already en route from the UN – those guys work fast.
Bruce will need some time in the medbay thanks to all over plasma burns – the plasma blaster weapon is truly scary. I worry the mental scars of everyone around him dying may take more time to heal. His promotion to Lance-Corporal for bravery in the face of extreme danger is scant consolation.
The reptilian alien corpses have been turned over to the lab team – Bruce has named them the “Shevaar”, apparently due to the hissing noise they make when shot.
