Gamecube recommendations
« on: August 18, 2013, 05:22:22 pm »

Used search, couldn't find an existing thread so here goes. In a spur of decadence I purchased a Gamecube but then hit a wall. What are the must-haves and neat-under-the-radar games for Gamecube? Both GC exclusives and multiplatformers are fine.

Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, full stop. I had almost 30 hours of play-time on my save file, and that's with a minimum of sidequests. Metroid Prime can be a bit clunky in areas, but it's still definitely worth it.

And before anybody else can say it, of course Smash Bros. Melee is up there.

EDIT: Can anybody give a word in either direction about the Fire Emblem game(s?) on Gamecube? I really want to play some Fire Emblem but can't pick what one to play.

While not necessarily under the radar, if you could, I would recommend Metroid Prime, which happens to my favorite game. If you like it, then you can also get its sequel, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, for the GC. Unfortunately, the third game in the series, Corruption, is a Wii game, so you'd only be able to get that if you have said console.

Another pair of games I'd recommend are Pikmin and Pikmin 2, though as you may or may not of heard, Pikmin 3 is a flagship title for the Wii U.

I suppose if you don't have a Dreamcast you could also get the two Sonic Adventure games.

That's all I can think of for now.

Every dwarf, every dwarven man, women, and child, that comes to our forts will die there; it's truly sad when you think about it. And we ask our selves, why? Why do we push forward, knowing this fate, that we are destined for failure? Because, this game grasps the concept of mortality. Some games you can never lose, but we all stop eventually, causing a 'death' to those game's 'worlds'. Dwarf Fortress gives us a definite end, knowing that we will leave that world eventually, and move on to more.

Let's see....

Super Mario Sunshine was okay. If you aren't a big fan of collectathons you might avoid it.

metroid prime 1 and 2 are great FPS-vanias (I guess you'd call them that?), I still go back and play them periodically.

Paper Mario: The thousand year door is a pretty great RPG.

The first Viewtiful joe I loved, but in my opinion Viewtiful joe 2 is a pretty big downgrade. It's still a good game, so I'd just get 1 and if you like it move on to 2 maybe.

Pikmin 1 and 2 are great.

Tales of Symphonia is on the gamecube if you're a fan of fairly long JRPGs.

Some lesser known stuff...

Baten Kaitos is perhaps the longest game I've played and is also JRPG-ey, although the plot is generally a bit better then one.

Once more, Skies of Arcadia: Legends is a GREAT JRPG that if you enjoy the genre at all you owe yourself to play.

Chibi robo is a fairly bizzare japanese game where you are a tiny robot cleaning up a house, with a plot that involves much larger robots, energy efficiency, spider robots/aliens I forget which, and normal aliens. I loved the hell out of it but I do love quirky junk. If you want something different it's probably good to watch some videos first and see if it sounds like your bag. I wouldn't buy it blind.

In a similar vein, Cubivore is a game where the entire ecology of a planet is cubes with little rectangles for various bodyparts. You run around and eat other cube animals and turn into different beasties depending on the number and color of the various rectangle meat things you eat.
Again, quirky, good, I still wouldn't buy it blind.

Killer 7 is a David Lynch film. More specifically it's an FPS-on-rails with puzzles that would make resident evil blush. You fight invisible exploding men with no eyes, enormous smiles, and an aversion to ever stop giggling unsettlingly by shooting them in glowing weak points which you have to scan to find. You also turn into multiple men via way of a room with a TV and a transparent gimp hanging from the ceiling via a little wire attached to his harness inside of it. The plot is completely incomprehensible but still a lot of fun to see happen. You also fight the power rangers in a gunfight. I know it sounds like I'm making fun of it but all that happened and I loved the hell out of it. But I also like David Lynch! If you like wierd surreal shit overlaid over a fairly typical "assassins kill a bunch of people" plot you should probably look into it. I wouldn't look at any plot before you do which is unfortunately most of the cutscenes. If you can find a gameplay video then that should be fine. But the gameplay isn't a super strong suit (although it does keep things fresh, you'll generally be playing just because the plot is so bizzare).

I think that's about it! Gamecube was kind've a bad time for nintendo but there's still quite a few gems kicking around in there.

EDIT: itisnotlogical - There's one fire emblem game on gamecube I think, and it's.... pretty normal fire emblem. Ike is easily the most lethal lord in the game to the point many people suspect a solo run with ike would be easier then a normal no death run past the first few missions. It seemed a little bland to me honestly. The next one is on Wii and seems much better to me, but that may be just because I've not played it.

EDIT2: Oh, I'll also vouch for Sonic Adventure 1 and 2. A lot of people like making them look TERRIBLE OH MY GOD but they're honestly not too bad. The little chao garden feature in SA2 I probably spent way more time then I should have with.

The Pikmin titles are now outrageously expensive. The release of 3 shot the price of 2 up.

Defenestration?

Oh sorry, wrong kind of recommendation. I played FireElmblem, Pikmin, various Rogue Leader titles, and then I guess Melee. Of course I bought my GameCube when it came out and haven't used it in 5 or 6 years.

Damn ninjas.

Paper Mario: Thousand-Year Door is an excellent Mario RPG.

Beyond Good and Evil is an action-adventure game that failed commercially, but got consistently good reviews. This is multi-platform and even available on PC.

Skies of Arcadia Legends is a GC remake of a Dreamcast JRPG. I enjoyed it, but I don't really play many JRPGs for comparison. Lots of flying ships and floating islands.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem is a Lovecraft inspired survival horror. It's set over a long time with you playing as plenty of different characters.

Viewtiful Joe is an platform side-scrolling beat-em-up who's gameplay I really enjoyed. It has a weird humour and cartoon style.

Ikaruga is a vertical scrolling shooter with an interesting mechanic where you can flip the colour of your ship from black to white. The ship is invulnerable to and fires shots the same colour as it.

Metal Gear Solid The Twin Snakes is a solid remake of the first MGS game on the PS1.

TimeSplitters 2 is worth a buy if you liked Goldeneye for the N64 and want some split screen multiplayer. Multi-platform again.

Resident Evil 4 is the first RE game to do the over the shoulder cam now the standard. Really enjoyed this at the time. Multi-platform.

Killer 7 is a weird, weird shooter. I suggest you check out some gameplay videos on YouTube.

Edit: Forgot to mention Zelda Wind Waker which while not perfect was very good fun.

Just remembered, Resident Evil 2 and 3 are available on GC. Although they have received absolutely no enhancements versus the PS1 versions (RE2 was actually better on the N64 IMO), they're both good if you've never played them before, 3 especially. I haven't played Code Veronica or the REmake, but those are both available on GC as well.

EDIT: Somehow forgot about Resident Evil 4. Has none of the extra side games of the PS2/Wii/PC/etc. versions but if you haven't played it at this point then you must have been under several rocks for the past few years.

First console I owned after 16-bit Sega was a PS2 in 2013.

It was a big rock.

I loved Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life and heartily recommend it. Harvest Moon: Magical Melody was better from a game mechanic point of view but I think A Wonderful Life had a better story. I actually cried manly tears of manliness because of a certain plot development, and misted up every year afterwards from a minigame resulting from that development. I still have mixed feelings about said minigame but I haven't forgotten it, that's for sure.

The thing is, wonderful life takes forever to get anywhere. After the first year things start to really drag on.

Most of the good one have already been mentioned.

A few that haven't been mentioned are Billy Hatcher and the LOTR games. these aren't masterwork pieces of gaming, but they aren't bad either.

E: the Baiten Kaitos series are quite interesting. Not many games on the Gamecube like it.
