Veles rules over the underworld, which the Slavs believed was a warm and pleasant place, where the dead tended after his cattle. His enemy was Perun, who ruled over the heavens and the sky. The ancient Slavs believed that rain was caused when Veles fought with Perun, with the seasons being caused by the continual death and rebirth of Veles. The Slavs also thought that Veles regularly sent the spirits of the dead into the world as his messengers. However much about what is known about Veles is conjecture, constructed from remnants of second-hand sources. Conveniently, he also has a Wikipedia article about him.
