if ICARUS invested actual thought into what Marie was saying, she might come to the conclusion that she does not have a soul, and that would unsettle her. Since it has no advantage of knowing that you have no soul, and since there is no downside to believing that you have a soul eventhough you might not have one, the overall effect is simply entirely removing a gigantic source of worry and existential dread that comes along with that question. ICARUS was basicaly just going (LALALA I CANT HEAR YOU) internaly the entire time, because she does not want to give Marie the chance to even instill a hint of a doubt in her mind.
and you gotta admit, it's kind of a mean thing to do and make someone question wether or not they have a soul, especially when that person is one of the first sentient AIs that currently exist and spends most her nights, unable to sleep, with trying to not be crushed by the question of what the hell she actually is. A object that does everything that a soul does traditionally. So, it would go to an afterlife, be able to be traded with a demon, and be the sole thing making something sentient.

And that last one is already disproven.

so, defining characteristics that seem to be universialy accepted


- humans are born with one
- when the body dies, the soul is what moves into the afterlife
- appearantly immortal
- and much more?




I suppose a good start would be finding a volunteer who gets into an absolutely magicaly sealed room that can not be observed from the outside and Kyle and the volunteer make up a codeword to prove their identities.

And anyways...well...how do you want proof for the others? And if it needs to be tradeable with demons, why not ask one of the resident demons? I'm sure Sen could give mind-numbing levels of detail on the nature of souls in the legal system.
