We don't need one. At all. We couldn't have resolved any previous plots by having giant humanoid artillery platforms.

Not even Dumah, seeing as the supernatural equivalent (Spooky) didn't manage to stop the charging.
Spooky isn't really a mech.

And also the dragon fight if Cyrielle didn't have a BS rifle.
Except the rifle wouldn't have worked if @GWG didn't forget to halve the result and misinterpreted it as an instant kill.

Yes, because a rifle that deals reduced damage and has a chance of interfering with the enemy that doesn't even have a remote chance of happening until they are at below 50% HP is more BS than Kyle's katana which could instant kill immediately using air magic he didn't even have.

Yeah but if you're screwing physics with magic you could make other unrealistic things that are still more practical. Relative to the other options available with the current parameters, its practicality does not increase.
1. So? Kyle's probably going to be needed for a lot of the big stuff...and it's one of the likelier things he is to like. And that most are to accept.
2. What do you have in mind, saying that?

1. Except he could just have his powered armor transformed into one by HILDA during combat anyway without requiring that much effort.
2. Air-resistance cancelling units for use in Sub-LEO spy satellites. High quality images, high speed. Can be crashed into targets if needed.

That is useful, but well...situational.

And less fun to figure out.

A mecha isn't very versatile either.

And less fun to figure out.
Easier to figure out as well.

Any sort of weapon that grants you a stat-total that is equivalent to a dragon is versatile, through sheer stat

Not necessarily. After all, it would be highly visible, have high potential for collateral damage, vulnerable to systems interference and possibly hijacking, doesn't raise every stat and vulnerable to antimagic.

when have we (or more importantly, kyle) ever cared about being stealthy or avoiding colateral damage?

In situations where it is necessary.

Comparatively, a series of rudimentary satellites with the enchantments necessary for them to ignore air resistance could survey areas quickly for imaging, crash into targets to eliminate them, act as bracelet teleport beacons if equipped with one (obviously they would be to used after a controlled crash) and help track targets. Unlike a mecha, there is no pilot inside them to risk, they are less vulnerable to hijacking (a one way ticket to the pavement/soon-to-be-crater isn't something most people are keen on), have a faster response time and, by the time their high velocity mass is close enough to their target to be seen, not as vulnerable to antimagic.

well, when it's necessary, we don't *have* to use the mech.

also I agree, a UG is cooler than a mech. ((muhaha, and so much more interesting once the ICARUS plot comes))

"Combat" comes up more often than "We need to get something in ELEO!"

Well, yes. That's why it's less fun. There's hardly anything to figure out, really.

Wouldn't they be moving too fast to be useful for much imaging?
Wouldn't crashing into stuff...break it?
Wouldn't tracking targets require them to stay fairly near said targets?
Wouldn't antimagic make their orbit decay faster than you can say "supersonic"?

well, when it's necessary, we don't *have* to use the mech.
True enough, I guess. Not a very good argument on its own, though.

Not necessarily seeing as spy satellites still work rather well despite moving quickly.

Quote
Wouldn't crashing into stuff...break it?
Hence why they are rudimentary and expendable.

Quote
Wouldn't tracking targets require them to stay fairly near said targets?
Or have multiple ones covering the world and switch the tracker duty to the one nearest as any given instant.

Quote
Wouldn't antimagic make their orbit decay faster than you can say "supersonic"?
Yes, hence the emphasis was on "close enough to their target to be seen", seeing as most targets cannot see something in orbit until its orbit has already decayed and sent it barreling down at them, antimagic won't work too well.
