Don't quit. Losing all your soldiers is just an XCOM thing; this game takes after its roots it seems. Hire up a new crew, and let's get our vengeance!

Look on the bright side: All the civilians survived!
You're right!

I wasn't planning to be able to get past mid-game or so on veteran anyway. Nearly losing against the smallest UFO, crewed by 'non-combatants' with pistols, just intimidated me. I noticed a critical flaw in my tactics, however, and will move to correct it.

This should continue until I at least lose my transport.

I don't know what all the fuss is about.  I'm still alive, and I even got promoted!  So, it seems to me everything is perfect.  The only flaw I see is the lack of a story about how awesome I really was in that mission.

Here is my guess on how my awesomeness went down:

((I forgot to turn off Steam's auto-updates for this game, and an update made my save unusable. I'll restart with the same settings, and continue like it never happened.))

Commander's Log

I am Melou Zhou, former captain in the PLA Ground Force. My predecessor is in a coma in the infirmary following a reportedly nearly disastrous battle. I am given to understand that this organization only recruits leaders from their combat personnel. As the only other active soldier was deemed unfit for command duty, the bureaucrats were forced to either break their charter or give command to someone unfamiliar with the project. I believe the lack of Chinese squeamishness with necessary sacrifices played a role in my placement.

Following a hasty re-hiring, these are the new Xenonaut soldiers:
((Felius has a sniper rifle. Monkeyhead gets a machine gun.))

While he was out, the scientific staff made a few discoveries:

We are unable to link our radar network with the major governments, for security and secrecy reasons. Fortunately, for all their advanced technology, the aliens are not good at masking their presence. We frequently receive reports that could be enemy craft. Our own fighters lack the range to act on this information.

With my predecessor unavailable, I have, with the assistance of the only other survivor, been analyzing the footage from the battle. It began with Russian aircraft managing to down a light scout in the Sakha region of eastern USSR.

The terrain made a perfect ambush point against us. My predecessor realized this, but decided the reinforced southern wall was not worth the effort to breach after a fragmentation rocket and a few seconds of machine gun fire proved inadequate at the task. I do not know why he was hording the explosive charges, but this proved a bad plan. He ordered the western wall blasted down and charged. There were casualties, of course, and they met a reptilian species this time. Despite the reptiles' extreme resiliency, devastating close-ranged weapons, and favorable terrain, only four xenonauts were killed taking the fortified position held by four of the reptiles.

Four soldiers remained to claim the downed craft. Three aliens were inside it. The two on breaching duty didn't survive the fight, and the ensuing standoff lasted for several minutes. Our infantry rockets were able to blast a hole in the side of a light scout, but EuchreJack ran out at that point and had to help gun them down with a dropped machine gun, his pistol useless against their armored hides.

If we can continue with trading six soldiers for seven enemies who have heavy advantages in biology, technology, leadership, and terrain, victory is well within our grasp -- Particularly as we bridge the tech barrier.

Naut me as well please. Soldier Disarcade ready to shoot them aliens up. If possible, I'd like the bravest soldier and the biggest shotgun.

Wow, I really was a big damn hero!  If only the rest of the squad had acted like myself, the mission would have gone far better.

Remember this simple equation: Gratuitous Violence = Victory!

(Also, you can sprinkle a few rocket launcher reloads among the troops and drop them at mission start if you want more ammo.  Of course, those troops won't be able to engage the aliens to maximum effectiveness on turn one, so plan accordingly.)

Obviously, I'm already the bravest soldier, irregardless of what the stats might say.  Never mind that I hide far behind you breach soldiers and out of sight of the alien menace.  Survivors write history and all that.   :P

I would like to request a guy with a shotgun called Isaac, his former career would be best suited as an engineer or something close.

It seems its going well.

I tried that, but rockets are heavy and everyone is loaded up on explosive charges. Ultimately, I decided on only bringing one reload.
