Xenonauts LP. It's like Cold War era X-Com.
« on: August 17, 2013, 04:55:44 pm »

It's time for everybody's favorite sort of LP: A nearly blind run of a beta version of a spiritual successor to X-Com!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I've only played a few missions, mostly waiting for its release, but enough waiting. I want to play it now.

From what I've seen, it is the most like the original of any other X-Com attempts, other than TFTD. It also gets rid of many annoyances, allowing troop ship seating arrangements, multiple default role loadouts (Optional, but you can set a RocketGuy loadout, then use it to easily give new recruits rocket launchers before manually give each one just enough rockets that they're not burdaned).

Air battles are now manually controlled, and can have multiple fighters on each side. I think I'll mostly refrain from showing these, since they're not all that different from each other and I don't want to spoil too much for those who haven't bought this yet.

I'm skipping difficulty choice, since nobody in their right mind would vote easy on an LP. I don't want to play on the hardest difficulty level, since the only game I beat from the original series was the first one, and that on the easiest setting.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Hopefully, that will be the only terrible misoginist joke I make in this thread. I'm setting this to "cheatingly easy" instead of the only real difficulty level in this genre. As a bonus to this, we won't survive long enough to spoil the end game.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'll show the weapons alongside the soldier stats (There's one screen with a list of their stats! This game is the best). But first, we need somewhere to live, location and name.

Whichever part of africa includes the horn.
Base to be on the horn's tip, called "The Mighty Terran Probe". TMTP if that's too long.

E: Subsequent bases to be named as lines from AC/DC's "Big Balls".

I think naming everything euphemistically might be edging a bit too close the forum guidelines.

PTW, regardless of the naming scheme.

Set our base up at the Himalayas.

There's a good half dozen or so lines in the noted song that's just fine s'far as that goes, yeah. Wouldn't suggest being crass about it :P

But eh, as you please.

I'd like our base to be in Berlin. I like worsening the cold war scare theme for fun and profit.

I was going to say Switzerland or something similar in Europe. I just assumed that people would find Europe too conventional, often LP's tend to do unconventional choices for their own sake.

For what it's worth, I don't think the aliens will care where they vapourize us.

Commander's log, February 03 1979

The old commander retired today. As his second-in-command, control over the last bunker of the 'Xenonaut' project now falls to me.

We are underneath the outskirts of East Berlin. My predecessor "Unimportant" to be a wonderfully witty name. I disagree, and have already submitted the paperwork to get it changed.

This is it, our last installation. It's been thirty years since the aliens attacked Iceland. One attack. We didn't even get any proof they were here, other than a few fleeting radar contacts and a new crater. I still sometimes catch myself wondering if it was all a hoax, but it was enough to unify the minds of governments across the world. The Xenonauts project once had bases scattered across the world, covering nearly all of Earth with arrays of the most advanced radars on the planet, specially tuned to detect them.

Nothing. Decades of silence and funding cuts. We're down to barely a dozen soldiers that haven't seen battle since signing-up (We're nonpartisan), two of which are retiring over the next few months, supported by a handful of pilots, four aircraft, and a few lab geeks. We don't even have any janitors.

Commander's Log, August 08, 1979

We escaped extinction by a hair's breadth today. The aliens are back. Militaries across the planet spotted impossible radar contacts. The Americans are still at DEFCON 1, the rest of the world following suit. We were the only ones to shoot one down. Supposedly a small scout, yet it had some sort of energy cannon that vaporized our lead fighter in the first seconds of battle. Part of me is glad that the alien craft was brought down in the Baltic Sea. Gives the troops more time for training exercises. We've been slipping in recent years, truth be told.

I've been on the phones trying to get funding back to where it was decades ago. We can barely afford to re-arm the fighters, let alone buy a replacement or bring the radar system back above minimal levels.

This may be my last entry. Ancient doctrine insists that commanders should be pulled from the rank-and-file, and remain on the front. A terrifying prospect - I've read the reports from Iceland - but better than being led by a commissioned officer.

Commander's Log, September 01, 0979

Tensions are still running hot, but funding has improved significantly. We won't be able to secure the Earth with new launch bases for at least half a year, but we will be able to defend Europe. Our science team is currently re-assessing our doctrines, and claim they'll be done in about a week.

I have been looking over the personnel files, and giving them the chance to switch to newer weapons, since we now have our pick of the world's equipment.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

((Weapon choices are: Shotgun, rifle, sniper rifle, machine gun, rocket launcher [frag rounds only], or pistol. There are flashbang grenades that prevent enemy reaction fire. Everyone carries unlimited glow sticks.))

Is anyone interested signing up with a soldier? I posted the full sheets in case anyone wanted, say, the Canadian with no combat experience, but you could just ask for a sniper rifle, renamed to McSniper, with no preference for which soldier you get.

Barbara Lewis, renamed to EuchreJane, Rocket Launcher plus pistol as backup.  Stays back and blows stuff up.  High Explosive Rockets.

I'd like one of the Barbara Lewis', the one with higher strength. Rename her to "Meatsheild",  and stick a combat shield, a pistol, and C4 and 2 grenades on her.

Save the load-out as "Breacher".

Send her forward to take the brunt of attacks, and to blow shit up.

Didn't notice there were two Barbara Lewis', fortunately with identical strength (My rocket launcher needs strength too).  So do you want the Barbara Lewis who is better at almost everything, or the one with more time units (it's a hard choice).

I'd like the time-units, because even with the high strength, the armor, shield, and C4 will lower her time-units as it is. So the higher the starting time units, the higher the final time-units after being kitted-out. Plus the idea is that she runs ahead after the scout to take the hits, so she needs more time-units to get further ahead than, say, a rifleman.
