Alright. I'll do some refurbishment later, and exchange the pistol for a hand crossbow.

Any problems with mine? I can explain anything in greater detail if you need it, I assumed we would be well equipped and skilled due to having existed for quite a while and so having acquired money for equipment with the more experienced of the company training the new recruits.

The following is in no way meant to be insulting or hurtful. I am just stating the facts that i ran across which rubbed me wrong. This may sometimes be very blunt but its only to make sure we are on the same page.

Well were should i start Patrick,

First of All: I doubt that Onyx can be worked into a Armour much less so into a Plate Armour. That is if we assume you mean the stone. If you mean the Gem than the sheer amount neded would be impossible to procure.

The next point is that such an armour even if it was possible to craft it would weigh far too much for any human being to carry. It is simply impossible. Not to mention that such an armour could be easily shattered. Take any kind of stone that is about as thick as a plate armour (which is about a few milimeters thick) you can break it apart in your hands.

Continuing on to your bow: We are in a Medieval timeset i doubt they had anything like a compound bow back then...maybe you meant a composite bow?

But we are not at the end. His Onyx Bastardsword while propably the only thing your character ones which would be possible to produce in medieval times would shatter upon impact. There is a reason people never used swords made of stone. Daggers yes, as sacrificial tools. And though it is said that Aztecs used Obsidian Swords, these were made from wood and Obsidian was added on the edges.

But lets ignore the simple matter of your Equipment for a second, lets assume instead of onyx plate armours they have plate armours out of normal iron or steel.
think for a moment 700 men, after your own description the best you can have for money, plus 700 destriers (propably closer to 1400 because you need spares) and their equipment (steel horse armour, plate armour, bastard swords, replacing your compound bow here with crossbows).
Take your whole glorious detail and now imagine how much all that stuff would cost. Now look at the map and read the Starting Story again. You are surrounded by poor and impoverished kingdoms with the notable exception of the Darkbrook Shogunate and the Theocracy of Mourn. Both of these who would be able to afford your detail wouldn't do it because they (in the case of Mourn) do not hire Mercenaries or (in the case of the Shogunate) won't buy your detail because for the same money the can get 20 times your number which is more useful to defend thier vast borders.

In other words on the entire map is not a single person able or willing to afford you at the beginning.

And finally i have complaints about your character. While i am sure you put lots of effort into him i can' tput it any other way but this: he is an utter and complete Mary Sue( if you are not sure what a Mary-Sue Character is have a read here , especially note the part about Cliched Character).

While ther eis nothing wrong with a Character with a Tragic Backstory yours is completely over the top and has reached a point where it isnt tragical anymore but has reached a comedic state. The whole description of your Character makes him a one dimensional figure for which we should feel emotion and hope that he makes better after so much tragedy but all in all i already don't like him. the whole description screams of the Dark Knight or Warrior Poet lamenting over his misfortunate lot in life while fighting the good fight, as a Mercenary no less.

All in all while terribly romantic such a character is one-sided,bland and seems utterly unreal. Correct me here if i have assumed wrong.

(( Onyx is intended purely as color not for materials, I'm sorry I should have been a lot clearer with that. The weapons and armor are all made out of iron or steel it just uses those colors to distinguish it. I was intended for steel. Looking it up I did mean compound bow but I didn't think to check if it existed in this time frame, going from that time composite would be more fitting so yes thats fine. Again, sorry I didn't make the color clearer.


I was basing it loosely off the result of a character I used in an AC a couple of years ago, the game beginning when he was a kid and ending with him launching a suicidal 1 man attack to rescue somebody he'd never even met and dieing to hold off the enemy until she could escape.
But looking at it from your point of view I can see it is a little hard to believe, I could barely believe it after I got the luckiest streak of rolls in history to pull off that rescue.
On the plus side an entire religion was based on him after it happened.

I'll rework the back story and cut the numbers down to..... what would be a good number? 150-200? ))

Okay, so you can either be some notable person or one of the red-bordered coastal states?

Can you provide additional information on notable peoples in the three predetermined states, (in case we want to be within the government of one, but not the government)?

Also, seems like a very...diverse set of cultures in such a small area. What're the units of each hex, (and is there a legend for types of terrain and their properties)? Btw, nice map, pass on my regards to shootnrun.

As far as cities go..it looks like only the top two have cities, and the bottom two look like absolute backwaters, (no roads? A single fort stranded on a peninsula?). Will our actions possibly change the landscape? (can we get some economics going up in here, get some roads and plant some cities)

Dibs on the second from the top, with the long stretch of road and massive border with the duchy.

Patrick Hunt rejected again. Your Character Designs are incredibly clichéd.

And again with the Equipment. Generally i dislike if people just assume from the beginning that they have incredibly awesome units to start with. But lets put that aside for a moment.
A good Destrier was a very expensive horse bred for war from its birth. Most Knights couldn't even afford one.

in comparison a Destrier was worth 25 times more than a Courser(a standard horse used by knights). And you have 200 of them. Such an amount of horses is worht more than one or two of the city states. And lets not forget you usually need two or three horses in case one bites the dust or is exhausted. For a effective Cavalry Force you would have 400 to 600 Destriers. And the requirements of maintaining such an amount of Horses. Alone in maintenance for the Horses you would have to pay 12 Ducats. Your 200 Mens equipment would amount to another 6 Ducats of Maintenance and now we haven't even touched their pay, which amounts to something between another 10 and 20 Ducats. All in all: 38 Ducats.

 Remember each City State starts with 10 Parcels of undeveloped land and between a Size 2 and Size 3 City. Thats 12 Ducats per season. You'd need 3 City States throwing their lot together and they still couldn't pay your Company. And thats not even the cost of replacing the horses should some die.

Furthermore you should inform yourself how you arm your Company, currently their Destriers are completely useless because your Company utilizes bastardswords which cannot be used from Horseback and Composite Bows which require extreme Training to be used from Horseback effectively.

Not to mention that Destriers are definetly the wrong choice of Horse for Horse Archers. They lack the Speed and Manouverability of the Courser as well as the stamina to ride over long distances at constant high speeds. As it is you spot a force of quite good looking fellows who tire rapidly with ponderous high maintenance horses which can carry you to battle but then your men have to dismount.

but the Choice of your Company and its Equipment is not why you get rejected if you want you can play with such a force although it will do you no good. The point is the Backstory.


@Grizzly Adamz:

Generally Everything you found in a Renaissance/Medieval Nation is possible. Depending on the Player Nations. Just go with what i said at the beginning: Nobles, Merchants, Generals, Revolutionary Leaders...etc. just apply common sense and you know what works in a Feudal Kingdom or a Patrician Republic.

The map as such is mostly there for fluff and visualization. Each of the City States starts with the same 10 Parcels of land, plus local modifications.
And yes you can develop the City States to a high degree, thats the point of the game.

Each of the City States starts a wee bit differently.

The Northernmost City State starts with an established Trade Route to a Country in the North and has a Size 3 City.

The One East of the Duchy of Kerns starts with a Size 3 City and a Road (but no Traderoute). He also has 15 Parcels of Land but has to deal with Horse Tribes living on his land every winter season.

The Middle one has Control of the only viable Landroute to the North, which he has blocked with a Size 1 Fort. He has a Size 3 City.

The Lower Middle One has a size 4 City and access to the Darkbrook which allows him to do Trade with the Cities upriver.

The one to the Right finally has a Size 1 City and a Size 3 Castle. and is pretty well defensible.

Could I get a guestimate of how much larger the continent is in the other directions? Particularly north & south- are we living on an isthmus? I wonder because: how much traffic will this coastal highway see?



btw, damn, was hoping to get some tacticool shit going- measuring distances to guestimate travel time up to third reich stuff.

It's a little hard to avoid making a cliche when every single kind of mercenary is a cliche, but one thing. If mine is a cliche how is our secret society that is basically identical to every other secret society in history not?

As for the equipment, it's meant to signify the company has been around for a long time and has built up a strong reputation in the area. Thats hard to do with hand me down weapons and patchwork armor and since I've gone for the low numbers approach I need good equipment or numbers alone will crush my men.

Well, you are meant to be starting from the bottom in the political heriarchy. It'd be unfair to start out with a well-respected mercenary company. Hence why I'm starting out with a bunch of thieves and whores and a crappy old ship. Speaking of...

That might be fine, except if I start with that I'll get wiped out in my first battle by enemies who have far higher numbers and have more experienced and have better equipment.

At least as a pirate you can avoid battle unless it's only a single enemy or you can pick weak targets, on land thats almost completely impossible to do in an era where cavalry ruled the battle field and will run down anybody retreating.

...... which is completely impossible to do as a mercenary given that if they hired you it's fairly likely they lack a real army themselves and you don't generally know in advance what battles your going to be thrown into
You also don't get to decide if you do it or not, you either follow the contract, or you find nobody will hire you because you can't be trusted.


I'll redesign it again, but on a side note. A bastard sword can be used for horseback perfectly fine as long as it's used for charging and not a straight battle since with it's weight and length if you swing it in as you charge past it brings a massive momentum with it.

So? Just fight against bandits and pirates who are usually badly equipped and trained. You'll get money and respect fairly quickly. Going after a large force instantly is a bad idea anyway, work your way up.
