A Dwarven Colosseum?
« on: August 17, 2013, 01:56:12 pm »

I've heard of someone creating a dwarven computer a while ago, and other people creating crazy-awesome projects.

:D So, would it be possible to create a giant arena reminiscent of the Roman Colosseum -- of course filled with idle dwarves with nothing to do in the stands, while watching poor Urist fight for his life against, say, captured enemies or beasts, or even other dwarves that need to train up their skills? Would it be possible to create something like this on a grand scale?

Of course there could be food and booze passed along in the crowd above in the stands, maybe make the whole place a meeting area/dining room while cheering at the carnage below?

I was just wondering if this would even be remotely possible -- or if the dwarves in the stands would even be affected at all...?

I've built fight pits before - not inspired by roman architecture though. I typically do combat training with my military, so I started putting elevated rings around the areas for my citizens to watch (designated with a statue garden).

I don't believe dwarves get any happy thoughts, but it should help mentally harden them, which is beneficial to a fortress.

Dwarves run away from frightening things, making 'stands' more of 'areas of mass panic.'  But no, put an amphitheater that has booze and food stocks around a sandy pit and station a dwarf inside and attach a cage full of exotic beasts and baddies to a lever. Then burrow all your dwarvves onto the amphitheater side, lock the doors, and pull the lever.

+1 for baddies that are flyers, shoot webs, or breathe fire.

Yeah, with that attitude. Come on, a spectacular failure is still spectacular.

Edit: I accidentally a word

??? It's just simply beyond my skills for the moment. Keep in mind I'm still quite new to the whole fortress mode (mostly an Adventurer). Doesn't mean I'll never attempt this in the future... I just need a little more time to get used to levers and such, then there's capturing the wild beasts  :P

Lol, I tried this once. It's not really that hard to set up using channels and drawbridges. Admittedly, mine was a glorified pit in the ground with a small off shoot to function as Militia Gladiator barracks and a small hospital, and I never caught anything to test it with before dieing to thirst (I really need to remember that some rivers freeze for longer than winter ::) ), but small steps at a time, eh? So if you're unsure, start with a small mass pitting zone to release weak animals for your militia to fight. My friend prefers to setup cages of disarmed goblins (*cough*and defenseless kangaroos*cough*) to release with a lever, but I always thought that was too much setup to do each time you wanted to execute something. Still, if/when you do this, make sure to post about it, yes? I'd love to see what these could be like if you get them working

i'm probably not going to build a colosseum, but i have four forgotten beasts trapped in separate pits.

i usually just kill gobs for exp, but i'm also thinking of pitting goblin super soldiers into pits with forgotten beasts.

unfortunately, the beasts i collected are fairly weak and would probably not survive more than two super soldiers

Indeed. Though it'll likely be sometime in the future after I figure out how to create drawbridges, while controlling levers, utilizing barracks, hospitals and such. And I need to figure out how to order my dwarves to trap critters... and/or goblins. This would certainly be a mere novelty construction. But, small steps first. If I have any luck, I'll share the outcomes.

Keep in mind that dwarves won't run from creatures that are chained up; and that chained creatures can still fight back (though they won't initiate combat).

Just keep the arena well away from the trade depot, or caravan guards will steal your precious XPs.

Squads of goblins being destroyed by a bronze colossus, dragon or whatever in an arena has been a staple source of entertainment for years in many of my forts. It's kind of taken a back seat to the gleeful joy of trying to kill every last goblin in a siege, with nobody (successfully) fleeing - their goal was to invade my fort and leave no survivors, so it was my goal to ensure that none of them survived, even the cowards in the back.

There are three things I know about dwarves:
1. They've got beards. Even the women.
2. They're short. Especially the women.
3. They're Scottish.

I outfitted one of my arenas with fortifications for walls instead of the usual glass blocks. Then I hosted a glorious battle with a Bronze Colossus against a whole squad of captured trolls. There was booze, biscuits and everyone was having a great time watching it (had to lock the door though). The Mayor, my Overseer and a whole bunch of important figures were attending.

Then the Colossus squeezed all his new friends through the fortifications and into the party room. That was when things got out of hand.
