So, a friend of mine and I are going to check out the newish BoardGame Cafe in town, but our other friend couldn't come so it's just the two of us. Any suggestions on good 2 player boardgames? If you're curious, their list of games is here:

(Also yes, I realize that you now know what city I live in, I'm not overly concerned.)

Here's three, starting with the most casual.

"Roll Through the Ages"
A miniature civilization game. Takes literally 30mins, up to an hour to play. Simple rules. You build cities, harvest grain, erect wonders, survive plagues and invasions. There's no map, everything is abstracted.

"Race for the Galaxy"
A 4X card game. There's exploration, combat and trade. May take 1-3 hours.

"Twilight Struggle"
A game about Cold War. Plays on a map with card-based events. Up to 6h, though usually less.

Well i'm not really into boardgames and the only ones i ever played were Monopoly and Catan (both better played with 3-4 players)
BUT i played the DOS version of Railroads and Robber Barons and i think it's a fun game (at least against the AI).

I can't swear by it tho since i... well never played the game itself with other people.

Wow, that's an impressive library they have there!

Let's see...a lot of those games would be best with 4 players, but here are a few that should work fine with 2:

Agricola
Dominion
Carcassone
Lords of Waterdeep
Mage Knight (Although that is a long, long game even with 2)
Munchkin
Pandemic
Puerto Rico
Quarriors

There are probably a bunch on there that would work fine with 2, but I either haven't played the game or haven't played it with 2 so I don't know how well it would actually work.

Thanks for the advice guys! Should be a good night! Need to find more local boardgamefolk in my area to play with that I can get along with, may meet a few here though. I love bigger games but it can be hard to get the players together for it.
And ya, they seem to have quite the extensive library, I'm glad they're finally open. They had a few hiccups with the city, just opened this summer even though they were ready last spring.

Space Hulk is always a great one, but I don't think they make it anymore because GW seems to hate anything thats not their core game, so probably won't have it.

Well, that escalated quickly, a friend from out of town is suprisingly in town, and bringing a sibling, so now we're 4. Well then.

Arkham Horror.

Hero Quest (good luck finding it though. Might be a reprint out there.)

Most of my previous suggestions still work, although Mage Knight is almost certainly too long.

Dungeon Lords & Dungeon Pets are both great 4 player games.

Space Alert is also a lot of fun, as a somewhat stressful and chaotic co-op game.

Do you have any general preference on the types of games you like? That'd help me give you a more directed list.

Personally, I like all types. One of the party is fairly new to boardgames, so nothing overly complex. Too bad, I could try to finally try Battlstar Galactica.

Hmm...ok, so Dungeon Lords might not be the best choice. Dungeon Pets is a little easier to grasp and still fun.

Agricola is great, but also a bit complex.

Dominion is always a good choice, scales well up to 4 players and is good for both experienced and new gamers.

7 Wonders is also a great game, scales well (up to 7 players even), doesn't take too long, and isn't too hard to get new people into.

Shadows over Camelot might also be fun. Kinda like Battlestar Galactica, but a bit simpler. Still has the 'possible traitor' aspect, which is always interesting.

Four is ideal for "Munchkin". It's a card game.. Best if you're all familiar with any sort of pen and paper RPGs, but still very enjoyable otherwise.

"Game of Thrones" is one of the best politics-driven boardgames. Best played with seven players, four is still good. If you're into the series, it's definitely a good choice. Relatively simple rules and great design makes for an effortless play.

"Chaos in the Old World" is a four player strategy based in the Warhammer world. You play as chaos gods out to corrupt the poor shmoes. You need to outcorrupt the others.

"Through the Ages"(bigger cousing of "Roll Through the Ages") and "Civilization" are both very similar games for up to four players. The latter plays on a (sorta-kinda randomly generated) map, the former retains the abstract approach of its smaller cousin.

Of the three games I mentioned in my previous post, only Roll Through the Ages can be played with more than two players.

Through the Ages is not newb friendly and will take even experienced players 3-4 hours, unless you turn your brain off and don't care what's going on, thus making turns shorter.

Munchkin is torture. It's only good when it ends never.

For Sale is very good with 4-6. It's two different bidding games in one. Very easy to pick up.
