My old Dutch teacher, when she was teaching me to properly roll my R's recommended taking a glass of water an gargling it to get a feel for the sort of sound you should be making. I'm not sure if this was really helpful though. But you really are just making a sort of gurgling sound.

Tongue position seems to be pretty important, but I don't think it's tongue relative to the rest of your mouth so much as the tongue muscles are tweaking your voice box to enable the rolling. Try playing with your tongue position, go nuts, see what kinds of sounds you get. For me  the tip is tilted upwords above the line of the front teeth but not quite touching the roof of my mouth when I roll my R's.

It's all in the tongue. It's going to be vibrating. Try imitating the sound of an idling gas engine using your tongue; it'll feel something like that.

Also, taking Spanish, and you're complaining about rolling Rs? WHAT ABOUT THE TEN THOUSAND TENSES, MAN!?  :P

What's hard about this? Just put your tongue against the top of your mouth and vibrate it?

EDIT: hold on

EDIT 2: Is this what you're trying to do? I don't know spanish

I made it through Spanish IV without being able to roll my R. I also didn't learn how to properly pronounce the single R until halfway through Spanish IV. Sounds like you're going to have a pretty hardcore class.

Okay. I actually have no idea how to do this. Even though I just did it there.

I would say press the tip of your tongue against the bottom of the inside of your upper lip. Then quickly lower it to the air between your lips so it makes a "click" sound. This is a lot like snapping your fingers. If you do it enough, I'm sure you'll easily figure out how to vibrate it.

English speaking people are generally not very good at this. :)

I have read somewhere that some people just can't do the "J" and the double "r" in Spanish, even if they try very hard, because it's something you have to begin very early in your life.

The only English speaking people who should be naturally good at this are lowland Scots, but I am terribly ashamed to say I can't roll my Rs properly. My mother grew up in London and I am forever tainted. People here are giving good advice tailored to Spanish though. Seemingly Spanish "trilled" Rs are different to other rolled Rs, such as in Czech or Russian.

My native tongue is Spanish, but I had a problem to pronounce the R when I was a child, so I was sent to a Speech-language pathology specialist. All you have to do is to stick your tongue (the upper part of it) to the irregular part of your mouth just behind your front teeth, then make air flow through the space between your tongue and the upper part of your mouth.

I hope it helps

Yeah, Tomcost, it's exactly what you describe.  But remember english speaker don't use so much the upper part of their tongue; so maybe Urist won't even know where it is and how to move it properly...

oh my god dude verb tenses are going to fucking destroy you

Six for each verb in the past, present, and future. Five if you only count those used in non-catalan dialects

Learning verb tenses can be pretty easy depending on your teacher. It's not like all of them get learned in one year.

How could you race F1 as a kid without this sound?
I had this one kid in class who could imitate various engines, from turbines on plane to tractor diesel. It was pretty fun.
