I like this system, although I think it's too complex for an RTD like Perplexicon.  Also the manuevers need work.  Far as I can see, there's nothing stopping me from making a forty speed character with a katana, waiting until the opponent attacks, then just quickdrawing his head off.

One thing I dislike is that there's pretty much no reason not to use all your remaining points in the second round.  Might I suggest having another stat, like "stamina", that determines how many dice you regen every round?  So if you have twenty points in it, and twenty points elsewhere, you get full pool back every turn; but if you only have ten points in stamina, you have to choose ten dice to regen.  If you also added a rule like "stamina stat is reduced by one every round" then that could simulate getting tired, and wearing your opponent out.

Also, if you're running a second test after this one, I'd like to be in it.

It's true that maneuvers need balancing. Overall, there's nothing to stop people from doing what you said; taking a massive amount in any one stat and using maneuvers that use that stat. One way to potentially fix that would be to make each maneuver have a different target number.  Ie, for the more powerful maneuvers, you'd need to roll higher for it to count as a success. Another way to do is to remove the fact that maneuvers use a single stat and to force multiple stat checks per each one. For example, Repulse might need both Dex and Str, dex to actually hit the attacker's weapon and then str to see how much it effects. Thrust might need dex and speed, etc.  If anyone has opinions or ideas about that, let me know.

The stamina thing is a good idea too. I was actually considering something somewhat similar, though it was going to rely on whoever won initiative in the round getting back full while the other person only got back a part. Though that could still happen in combination with yours. Plus it would add a whole new set of potential moves that work to lower your opponent's stamina. Or even trading in stamina dice to use as other stat dice for a sort of quickly tiring overdrive mode.

It's pretty dang complex. It would be simpler if we were using GURPS.

Yeah, I know. I'll probably just have a simple thing in there for standard and then the rules for this if they're really feeling brave.

I do like the concept of this system though, I think it could be pretty fun if I get it working right.

What did the two combatants think? I know you only sorta understood it because I was too lazy to explain it in detail, but still.

I regretted putting points into anything other than strength, seeing as I didn't use anything else at all and endurance was basically a shitty version of strength.

Quickdraw seemed to be pretty overpowered with execute's setup and if Execute had just solely focused on sheathing and then using that I probably wouldn't have lived long.

If I had put a full 30 in strength I could have quite possibly created a feedback loop of stagger and repulse, with the three dex giving me a free thrust attack. I was annoyed when I remembered that I had endurance.

Seriously, fix endurance.

I'm wondering how a multi-man melee would go.

Multiman would be pretty complex, though also probably pretty freaking quick. Splitting your dice between multiple people is a good way to get murdered.

And yeah, right now, the major problem is balancing the stats so that 1. They're all useful and 2. You can't just dump one stat with all 40 points and then slaughter with a single blow whenever your turn comes up.

Alright; thats gonna be what I work on for now. I'll let everyone know when the next test is. Derm, You have the right to a spot in it, if you so desire.

I forgot I even had that.

Yes basically a gravemind quote, I guess. It's more of a 'Your RTD's made me the monster I am today!' type of thing nowadays, I think.

I will probably make a character for the next test. After all, we need to see how the system acts when somebody gets the worst rolls possible.

Honestly, that system seems more geared towards an RTD in itself rather than just one part of a game, and if the skills could be balanced, make up some points to buy better weapons and such, it would be pretty damn awesome, but if you included it in any other game, I think it would just make it too complex.

Actually, if the number of stats were reduced for simplicity, and combat boiled down to match...
Here, use [ color = transparent ] to differentiate between Piecewise's official tests and my unofficial one.
Create a character using 10 points. The stats are:
Speed
Pool
Potency
Combat

Speed vs Speed for going first
Combat vs Combat for dodging an attack, or taking damage.
Potency vs Potency for enduring magic, or being affected.
A win of 5 or more for the aggressor is an instant kill (some exceptions apply).
Equipment gives bonuses on aggression or defense, rather than directly to a skill.
Pool is how much you can cast per turn, obviously. However, only up to 4 words a spell regardless of pool.
Turns are simultaneous.

2 characters, please. Current word set fully allowed, except rare or hazardous materials.
