Really sorry about disappearing for a few days, but it couldn't be helped, and it was quite the shock.
Not going into that. If I disappear again and it becomes a problem, feel free to rotate me out.

Also, that potency system seems... really good. Probably because I'm in the mood of "Dice pools, good! Single dice, bad!" recently.

Anyway, actions!

Here's a question.

If you don't have enough successes, what happens? Do elements start dropping out--e.g, an Adamantine [4] Lead [1] Sword [2] with 5 successes is a chunk of lead-adamantine alloy--or would extra minuses come in--e.g, that Leadamantine sword would get Tiny [-2] added--or would it explode or something with a danger depending on how much you failed by/the power of the spell, or would it just fail, Or what?
There would be a couple ways to handle that, I believe I talked about dropping words in the earlier post, but as I see it you could either

1. Drop words randomly till the potency roll is good enough. Which would create random effects semi-related to what was cast, which is good.

2. The spell fizzles completely. Kinda boring.

3. If you're 1 or 2 off, then it does 1. If you're 3 off, it does 2, if you're more then that off, it back fires.

I'll probably do a combination of things; since you always want to include the possibility of critical failures. Today I'm going to be working on more adjectives, as well as banging out what other kind of systems to have. I need to work out a method of doing transformations that feels nice and magical and is balanced. I'm considering the way I posted a while back, because it has a degree of symbolic ease to it.

The dragon sorcerer goes all fist wizard on Tsuchi and punches him straight in the solar plexus with a force coated fist. The blow sends Tsuchi flying back several feet before rolling several more. He's back up moments later, but he's shaky on his feet. He's got a few broken ribs and hasn't quite caught his breath again.

I believe thats everyone for this turn.

How about...

Advanced and Primitive? Primitive Steel Sword would be a lump of metal with a sharp edge, Advanced might have a vibrating blade, that sort of thing.

Anyways, The idea for enchanting is thus (as inspired by Ther)

There isn't a word for enchanting. Thats boring, after all. Instead it will be handled via Engraving. Basically, engrave the word or words you want into whatever object you want and they are imbued permanently into that object. Once enchanted like this, the object can't be "unenchanted". This will be handled in much the same way as spells, with potency scores that accumulate. You can add more words later, but it would still count the existing words as though they were being used too. (Ie, take a sword and enchant it with a 3 score word and it needs 3 successes. Take that same sword and enchant it with a 2 score word and it would need 5 successes to be successful.)

Adding multiple of the same word would increase the magnitude effect.

I haven't figured out how to do personal transformations though. I have been thinking about how to balance them though.

1.Not instant. It needs to take time to do. It should be an act of preparation, not of last second defense. Although, I'm considering whether to allow turning the effect on and off. It seems reasonable.

2. It should be harder to the more immaterial substances. No more air men, LOOKING AT YOU HARRY. It should still be possible, but it should be difficult.

3. Should also be harder to use substances that are extremely dangerous and powerful. Becoming a man made of red death should be pretty damn hard, require high potency and take time.

Questions include:

Should it be like enchanting, but effect you? Ie should it be transformative or should it give you aspects of the word? Perhaps versions of both?

You had 2, used it, and then 1 came back.

so 1

Whoo...

And why not have it basically be enchanting, just with tattoos/dyes being the mode of creation rather than carving the words?

Wow all those rules sound real good up until you realize that it would take goddamn forever to get anything done in a world where death is one failed dodge away and the turns don't come nigh instantly.

Fifteen turns of perfect rolls to transform myself into iron. About a sixth of those I'm going to injure myself severely, and probably ultra soon after I start I'm gonna get swarmed, die, and then have to start all over again at base stats fifty turns later.

Is this the bit where you say 'Well, yeah!'?

Yhea, it sounds nice, but it's like when masthacheese made that duel at dawn game, slow paced and deliberate sounds nice on paper, but in practice, it turns an already slow medium into a glacial one, no offence intended mastha.

And with the inclusion of rolls into the mix, like derm said, being made out of steel isn't good when in any point in the process, it could explode or turn you into a metal sculpture from an unlucky one or six, it would work in a faster medium, but even then you've still got the fact any screw ups of the cards could have you starting over again.
