Child Education in MW?
« on: August 14, 2013, 06:06:34 pm »

It seems that between babies and children, I have roughly two kids to each adult. A bit of an issue. That got me to thinking...

With all the neat ways to train adults in MW, is there a way to teach the kids? Granted, I could probably assign one to the library to see what happens, but this is a broader question.
The only problem I'm having with the library is that I've been buying up every crate of books and library supplies I can get my hands on, writing books on repeat, and I still can't get enough to even make a reasonable dent in training noobs. My Stocks>tools has thousands of items in it, most of which are pages. :s I've got about twenty stupid craft artifacts. -.- At least I can throw them in a display case, but that doesn't help fend off the inevitable tide of massive creatures. I'd settle for an artifact hatch cover at this point T.T.

I'd love to apprentice the brats into masonry, or smithing, or even gem cutting. I can't imagine the industrious Dwarven culture letting such a labor pool go to waste. >:) Sure, I could cheat with DT and make them work, but I'm looking for something that offers a middle ground between cheating and letting them use the Legendary Dining Room / Tavern / Podium as a ball pit. Ooh... ball pit... a Coinstar might be interesting...

Lock all the children in danger room with enough food stockpiled to last until adulthood.

You're aware that Meph nerfed the Danger Room in MW? Coinstar might work, but it could easily go very wrong.

Besides, that wouldn't help with the silly 'crafter' moods.

I haven't tried one for a while, and besides you didn't really want all those artifact limestone sceptres anyway did you?

lol, I could use some doors (come to think of it, just doing some major wall building might give me some masons, but kids still won't do it)

I did some SCIENCE and it is clear that children and babies cannot use the libraries. I figured, but it's confirmed. I just set the Profile to allow all children and babies, and set it to study. No one got assigned the task.

Giving all the kids Mini-Forges should totally let them earn smithing experience.

To learn via the library a dwarf needs the skill enabled. That's how it works, the dwarf just makes a whole bunch of items using that skill, then they are put in a notebook, and the notebook destroyed. To train children you would have to enable the skill, you can do this in dwarf therapist, it is a cheat, but possible.

Thanks, you answered my question from the question thread. I didn't notice that being the case before. It doesn't work like that for the military dorfs, because there are no labors for those skills. I've been using the Profile manager to isolate dorfs, but I had been wondering why sometimes it didn't seem to work. I love the interface hacks MW uses, but I wish there was one for the Profile list. Sorting/searching is absolutely a necessity at 100+ dorfs.

Dwarven Day Care http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=91093.0

"It's like regular childcare, except with more dogs, and less care." 'Nough said.

Alternatively, Vampire day care. Send all the kids to go live with the your legendary weaponsmith vampire so he has snacks to keep pumping out the masterpiece great axes. Build an airlock so that any who survive can be released after they no longer care about anything anymore.

I should make an ogre daycare, only with drakes as dogs and no supplies since they don't need to eat or drink. Just make sure to mod them so that they learn.

There is... sort by name, sort by profession, sort by squad. All of those are available for the profile manager.
Dfhack.ini:
Code: [Select]
# sort units and items in the on-screen list
keybinding add Alt-Shift-N "sort-units name" "sort-items description"
keybinding add Alt-Shift-R "sort-units arrival"
keybinding add Alt-Shift-T "sort-units profession" "sort-items type material"
keybinding add Alt-Shift-Q "sort-units squad_position" "sort-items quality"

o.O omg thank you. I wish there was a way to display these keybinds where appropriate in-game, that's the fourth or fifth time I've had that happen.
