checking if embark has flux AFTER embarking
« on: August 14, 2013, 04:21:10 pm »

hey guys

i embarked near a volcano and i could swear i embarked so the lower 3 tiles were from a flux-biom. now i have nearly mined out 10 complete layers and didnt find a single flux stone (marble, chalk etc.).

is there a way to check if my embark side realy has flux (just if it has , not where) like when embarking new? another way than backup-savegame, give up , reembark and check abondoned map ...

If you have DFHack then you can use it's prospect tool.

If not, just dig exploratory shafts. I feel like I see most of my flux stone around the second cavern layer. If you hate having a bunch of random shafts dug into your map, savescum afterwards.

Check your Stones screen. If any flux stones are in green and you haven't altered the menu yourself, then you have that kind of flux.

look for it in sedimentary layers, most flux is found in there, or in marble, which is metamorphic. sedimentary rocks also typically contain iron and the mineral forms of coke, so for a strong steel industry, look for sedimentary layers, especially chalk, which forms whole layers

I've found marble in 10 of my last 10 embarks.  Pretty much guaranteed flux.

Marble at 35 is pretty normal. Marble occurs in the metamorphic layers and can show up anywhere from z10 to z50 below the surface in my experience. Marble is by far the most common flux stone, as long as you have any metamorphic layers at all, your chances for marble are very good.

And the indirect check via the 'stone' register of the 'z' menu screens should have hinted at the presence of the marble layer already - as sutremaine said: if layers of a flux stone or of obsidian are present on your embark, these stones will not be considered 'economical' and will be unrestricted (green letters) for use by masons, mechanics and stonecrafters.

DFhack's prospect is really unreliable. It shows me Ores = 0 (really bad luck I guess), but with reveal I have located several gold veins.

make sure you use "prospect all" or it wont show you anything you haven't uncovered yourself. Or anything that isn't visible from the surface if you haven't started digging yet.

thanks guys :-) im so damn glad i found flux... steel is just so much better than iron

another question, is it possible to see if my empark-spot has bituminous coal or lignite? (the "stone-fuels") before embarking when i am searching for aquifers/flux stone/soil etc... ?

Other than using something like DFHack, no. Both kinds of coals are pretty rare even at high ore frequency. Seems like it's easier to find volcano by at least third cavern layer by accident than coal.

Even if you find coal, it won't last long and you'll need wood or magma to turn it into coke. Go with magma forges, either above the magma sea or bring your magma up with pump stacks or pistons.
