You quaff down the potion and go again for the shieldbreaker maneuver - but unfortunately, the shade angles its shield just right to avoid damaging it. It follows up with a clumsy strike, but you are even clumsier and are hit, but its hardly worse than a scratch this time. Still, it is enough to unbalance you - you can't hit the shade, who stands perfectly still as if to mock you.

You spring to defend yourself against the next strike, but aren't quite fast enough to avoid the cut in your shoulder. The pain finally gives you the strength to hit your enemy, causing it to vanish into the... whatever dimension these shades vanish into. Two down, two to go. Right?

Four of them? I thought there where only two...

Ah well. break there shields when they come in, and otherwise just keep them in the doorway one at a time.

Two down, two to go. Right?
That should be right... but the fact that it's mentioned at all seems like a hint, along with the whole "sounds like 'I t u e' or 'n r d r.'" Our best option still seems like [see above Aseaheru act] right now, but if there is a "fifth" flickerer we should be very worried.

(Also, the stats say our greatsword grants the boot's effects.)

Now imagine the miles of metamorphic rock it's embedded in that no pick or chisel will ever touch. Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.

It doesn't take long for the third creature to storm at you, in such a clumsy way do do not even need to dodge. It is better prepared for your attack, but not quite enough. You sense the enemy is barely saved by its flickering, and deflect its incoming attack with your sword, extending the parry into a jab that penetrates the armor, causing the shade to stumble backwards as it fades away.

The final shade, similarly to the one before, attacks in a predictable, easy to block fashion, but this time, you can't use it to your advantage. After a bit of back and forth, you manage to land a hit, which mostly gets absorbed in an awkward combination of armor and phasing. After trading more parries and dodges, you find an opening in your opponent's defenses, only to see it flicker out of existence for just the split second you would have needed to kill it. Surprised by this turn of events, you miss the shade's counterattack, cutting over your chest, but your next attack lands on your foe's neck, severing the head, which along with the rest of its body and equipment fades into nothingness. Everything is quiet.

Can we grab the empty potion vial or no?

And anyways, thank " " for the knowledge we needed, then to a new room for the looting.

then to a new room for the looting.
To the room we just cleared, that is; search it, then see if anything happens when you place c) on the floor in there, and if you can place it on a pillar. If nothing happens or is discovered, keep it and go west.

You thank " " for his assistance and leave for the room you met the shades, and make sure to keep the empty vial. Looks like something is lying there - seven silver coins. None of the pillars have any compartments to place anything in them, and you don't find anything else suspicious. So you place down the snake figurine...

You get the distinct impression that, while this isn't wholly wrong, it just isn't the right thing to do. Lefft with nothing else to do, you pick it back up and go west.

Just a chest behind the door? At least it's a break from the constant stream of monsters.

Also, sacrifice four silver coins as replacement to being unable to sacrifice corpses.

You hack and slash at the chest for a few times before you are suitably convinced it is neither trap nor trapper, and open it, finding 1 gold coin, 11 silver coins (100 silver make a gold, and 100 copper make a silver), two rations of unknown nature, a golden figurine of a dragon, and a strange apparatus. You sacrifice four silver coins to make up for the shades that you couldn't sacrifice, and consider whether you need to do penance for missing other sacrifices, but none come to mind right now.

Do we have any clear idea that money will be useful at all in this place? Out of all reality, civilization tends to be in a rather extreme minority, but if the money has the potential to buy us rations... " " would not be satisfied with a follower who could not plan far enough ahead to keep from starving while deep in the horrors of this place. But for the moment...

Examine the "apparatus" carefully; what is it made of? What are its pieces shaped like?
