None of the pillars have any compartments to place anything in them, and you don't find anything else suspicious.
Also look at the alcoves in the pillars.
What? Do you mean in another room I've forgotten? The starting-ish room is probably something we should look back to for clues (like if it changed), but that's all I recall at the moment.

Imagine a cool peice of sky-blue and milk-white marble about 3cm by 2cm and by 0.5cm, containing a tiny 2mm malacolite crystal. Now imagine the miles of metamorphic rock it's embedded in that no pick or chisel will ever touch. Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.

This one. If we shove statues in them we should check to see if they have holes that just fit one disk or what.

But what alcoves are you talking about? That's what the GM quote was supposed to point out to you. One of us is confused, and it's very uncomfortable.

Do we have any clear idea that money will be useful at all in this place? Out of all reality, civilization tends to be in a rather extreme minority, but if the money has the potential to buy us rations... " " would not be satisfied with a follower who could not plan far enough ahead to keep from starving while deep in the horrors of this place. But for the moment...

Examine the "apparatus" carefully; what is it made of? What are its pieces shaped like?

The Everdeeps are a strange place - You have heard that most of the environments can reshape themselves, but rarely for someone exploring it. Yet, there are islands of stability, and places not quite within the Everdeeps. Merchants supposedly make their homes there, and other service industries, yes, rumor has it that small villages can be found if you're lucky. You're not quite certain how this all works out, but apparently, it does.

You look at the apparatus. You don't know what it could be made of - it's some dark, almost shadowy material, but whether it's metal, wood, rock, or something else entirely isn't clear. The moving parts you can see are rods and joints, arranged around a cube with a single opening, which can be closed with some sort of hatch.

While you're at it, you consider the rooms you've been to yet. There are three doors you have yet to go through, all in the "entrance hall", and you haven't opened the chest protected by the scythe trap, of course.

There seems quite a bit to take in in this room. But right now, it seems those two devourers are the most important, even if not the strangest.

Charge the nearer, once its dead wait for the other and break its defences.

You charge the nearest devourer, nearly killing it by driving your sword through its body, but only nearly - it gets a bite in. The other devourer rushes towards you as well, reaching the one broad passage between a dense column of pillars - just outside the range of your charge. In the meantime, you finish off the wounded horror.

Wait for it to advance, charge and break the shield.

You wait for the second devourer to approach so you can shatter its shield, but as you wait, you realizing it is doing two things making this moot - for one, it isn't carrying a shield, for two, it isn't approaching. It isn't even causing its floating maws to fly at you.

It just stands there, its tongues gliding over its teeth, chanting "Devour for Dhosh. Feed for Dhosh." It seems doubtful it understands the concept of "friendly."

Well, lets back up a bit and loot the first.
And chuck the thing some meat while we are at it.
