Question: Any way to run DF on Mac 10.4.11?
« on: August 11, 2013, 10:28:44 pm »

Recently my desktop managed to brick itself, meaning I'm stuck with my laptop which is running off OS X 10.4.11. Among the many other problems with running anything at all I've found myself unable to run Dwarf Fortress. In the terminal I get the following results:

So basically, is there any way to get it running or am I just going to have to wait until I can get my desktop fixed?

Note: I'm unable to update my OS to 10.5.x as the discs for it aren't compatible with my model of macbook. I'm also not willing to upgrade to 10.6.x as I'd like to keep below 10.5.3 to avoid the 'update' that removes support for 256 colour mode, rendering older games unplayable.

I've heard of some success using WINE in older threads. But not being a Mac user, I don't know. Current DF likely won't run in older OS X natively anymore since last I could find, it needed at least 10.6.

Hopefully someone can advise better soon!

First: find out what architecture your macbook uses. If it's not compatible with 10.5 then I'd say it's an old G4 MBP, and you're out of luck running DF. If it's an intel macbook then it may be possible...

The error message you posted indicates you don't have libfreetype installed on your system, or you have it but in another location. Since it's looking for it in the X11 folder, try upgrading/reinstalling X11 and see if it fixes the problem. If it does not, next step would be looking for a freetype lib in one of your system folders, and copying/linking it to the location DF looks for it: (/usr/X11R6/lib/libfreetype.6.dylib)
