Medical screenings and such are part of the procedure, IIRC.

100k people each chipping in 20 bucks in applicatio fee, we'll be up to the 20 billion that this will realistically take (assuming various space agencies are super generous with technical support) in no time!

Can we vote people out? Please...
Vote them out the airlock? Hell, even I'd watch that.

The first 5 star submission is this guy.

Willard Sollano Daniac

His piece in his profile about a magnetic propulsion power generator "Producing Infinite Energy" instantly rings kook scientist bells. See the lecture below from a professor of physics about these sorts of engineers.

If this reality show on Mars would take about forty or so years to happen, I sense that the production company will give them improper water filters one weekend, for the ratings of course.  ;)

They should add killer robots, mind-control tech and explosions.

Heck, I'd happily watch Einsteinian Roulette: The Reality Show.

Hey, he's interested in Albert Einstine! :P

E: Man. Can I find "The Box" somewhere online? It sounds like a great thing to build a website around. (A la FSTDT)

I think I would have bigger chances to get to mars by grabbing a shovel and diggind to the other side of Earth, then jumping in the hole.
they are handwaving way too many things for my tastes.

On the other hand, I do feel like a big part of the reason we haven't colonized mars already is an unnatural concern for "safety" - this from countries who send people to die every year for significantly less in terms of rewards
We don't send people to die, we send them into situations to achieve a goal. Death is a possibility.
Sending some people to a place without a plan, knowing they will die there, that is something else.
Baby steps. Land someone on Mars, then come home. Then build a base. Don't just chuck TV stars onto a planet seeing how long it'll be before they die.

actually, sending somebody there and leaving him there with some basic infrastructure might even be a smaller step than sending somebody and then bringing him back. One way trips have been proposed in the past as a way to cut cost and size of the spacecraft required.
The bit about TV stars however is entirely right. Especially reality TV show stars.

I wouldn't mind seeing Honey Boo Boo and similar in space. Alone, with nobody to pay attention to them, living a cold monastic existence until the descendants of humanity find their bones in their primitive little base.

Are we really turning Mars into space Australia for exiled reality tv stars?

THIS IS HOW IT'LL GET FUNDED

LW, that's not a good idea. They'll start to breed, and when we want to seriously colonize Mars in a 100 years, it'll be overrun with the offspring of reality TV stars.
