Vermin invaders and invaders' vermin
« on: August 09, 2013, 12:50:00 pm »

Three related ideas here.

1. Savage biomes could see seasonal invasions by huge swarms of biome-appropriate vermin. These try to path to your food stocks, farms, daycare facilities, or other appropriate targets (or alternatively, spawn right on them if vermin pathing is an issue). Doors and traps are no obstacle to vermin, so alternative measures (small animal traps, trappers, cats) must be employed.  Real-world examples include army ants, lemmings, locusts, and starlings. Particularly evil swarming vermin could inflict syndromes, too. I know that there are periodic explosions of some vermin, especially fish, but they generally pose no threat to a fortress.

2. Invaders who bring nasty vermin with them. These could be snuck in (seems like a kobold sort of thing to do), smuggled in by vampires (the arrival of vampires in fiction is often associated with plagues of rats and other vermin - example), or thrown in by besieging enemies. Vermin used offensively would obviously by of the vilest sort. I would love to see kobolds distracting pursuers by throwing scorpions and whatnot at them, just like in Kobold Quest. Goblins could replace stolen infants with writhing maggots or sneak deadly spiders into your mayor's bedroom, just like in Dr. No.

3. Invaders who are made of or can turn into vermin. Forgotten beasts that trail vermin instead of causing syndromes directly or that collapse into hundreds of vermin when they're killed; vampires who turn into a swarm of bats and fly through gratings and bars to reach their victims and evade pursuit; etc.

A fourth idea:

4) Invaders who are infested with parasitic vermin, with the vermin leaving their bodies when they die.

If invaders can utilize vermin, dwarves should be able to. (Whambler-throwing squads anyone?)

I think the kobolts might not be the right race for utilizing vermin; it seems more like a guerilla tactic. Kobolts are just out to steal, not to sabotage. It might be better suited for civilisations that are overpowered by your dwarves. Around the time when they start digging might be a good option.

I also think that the parasites should treatable by a doctor, perhaps after a familiarisation process. Else, the only way to deal with them would be to give all your dwarves a guard cat, or to kill large portions of the fort.

Although if the kobolds end up going to war with you in the same manner that we go to war with goblins, why shouldn't they use vermin? You know, actual kobold sieges and things. They would be completely overpowered by Dwarves, so it makes sense for them to use dirty tricks. Poison your wells.

I forgot kobolts could do that. I agree kobolts would be a very well suited race in that case.

About that vampire thing: would they just bring the vermin with them? Supernatural evils should spawn or attract vermin. Some abominations, like a titan associated with disease, would have all sorts of disgusting creatures swarming around them wherever they go.

About sneaking in vermin: it would be cool if enemy civilizations sent assassins to hide poisonous vermin inside containers and equipment belonging to someone important. Like, a stealthy goblin would place a scorpion inside the king's shoe and take off before someone takes notice.

I can imagine the bugreports for this, starving dwarves eating the trap vermin before it even manage to kill someone, or be known :D

I think Kobolds would be the most suitable civ to use vermins, out of all of them, to harass others to steal things more efficiently.

Haha Urist McKing cancels putting on shoe: Hunting for vermin
*Finds Scorpion in Shoe, promptly eats it*
*Urist McKing has eaten recently*
*Puts on shoe*

Dracula's thrall Renfield collected vermin; in Nosferatu, Count Orlok literally brought coffins full of rats with him. So there is some precedent for vampires that take a hands-on approach to vermin, although spawning or attracting vermin make sense too.

That's creepy, but not epic like a horsemen-of-the-apocalypse-type that summons forth locust swarms from out of sight.

Collecting naturally-occurring vermin sounds more like a creepy hobby or the prelude to a childish prank, though vampires keeping bats as pets could be neat, almost endearing.

another great idea- dwarven children catching vermin for bug collections, to keep as pets, or to play pranks with

although i like the idea of a vampire who plays pranks. "who put this fake dog turd here?" "Bleh!" <bites neck>

we should be able to have the power to literally invade vermin.....
on a more relevant note i think plague would be a better name than invasion
