What hype are you referring to? I actually haven't heard anything in the general gaming media, unless you mean through their forums. But even when I was into X3 AP the website looked aged and forlorn. I was just expecting it whenever, in fact this was a complete surprise and I'm just happy it'll be out within the year.
The issue was that EGOSOFT was like "HEY, GUYS, X-REBIRTH! IT'S HAPPENING! CHECK IT OUT!" and everyone was like "YEAH!!!!!" This was 2-3 years ago. Then they were like "HEY, GUYS, RELEASE DATE! CHECK IT OUT!" and everyone was like "YEAH!!!!!" Then they were like "uhhmm.... Sorry about that! We've got to push back the release date! Next year!" and everyone was like "YEA- oh wait.. umm... okay! Whenever is good, EGOSOFT! Just give us delicious space sims!" Then it pushed back again, and people got less enthusiastic, and pushed back again, and less enthusiastic, until EGOSOFT just said "Okay, sorry, the next time you hear from us it'll be the real deal. We're really sorry about that. It's just a much bigger project than we thought." Then they went completely dark with any information at all, and the fans kept poking around the company's forums asking information, and when the EGOSOFT employees actually did answer, it was pretty much "Don't worry, we're still working on it." and that's basically all that was said. It's not like there was a colossal instance of AAA media hype, since EGOSOFT is too small-scale for that, it's just that they didn't deliver when they said they would and then went dark.
To be honest i am disapointed in them, in my book they had some trouble managing the hype and i got burned out about it. I was hyped i wanted the game bad and now they drop the bomb 15 november... fine, look i dont care anymore did i love the serie? yes i did but your improper hype management and general lack of feedback to your community gave me a sour feeling and i am still debating if i should buy their new title or wait.
Well, while you've got your knickers in a twist, everyone else will go ahead and enjoy the game without you. =P
This isn't like EA or something, where boycotting them makes sense because they are a shitty company and ruin everything they touch, this is an independent gaming company that fucked up, and instead of trying to fix it and possibly making it worse, they just stopped doing anything other than telling people that they were still working on it. You're not proving much of a point by not buying their game if you're upset with what they did. They already know people are upset with them, they already know they should better manage their publicity. The only thing that will happen if you don't buy the game is you'll be hurting them financially and you may never see another X-title again if there's enough people that are being that grumpy. Now, if you don't buy the game because you won't like it, that's different.
Dont get me wrong they have good ideas, some area will be improved, im just curious about their new direction they took. Hell they even said something about unlocking weapon during the storyline in thei *controls video* they posted yesterday, THE HELL?! unlock?!?! In a X game there is no fucking unlock, you make money and you buy stuff, now if the game prevent me to install something on my ship because i didnt do quest X...... it wont make me happy. And the whole one ship only crap..... curious to see how it ends up.
In the video, he says that not all weapons will be available at the beginning, but he didn't say that they must be "unlocked". He said "upgrade". If you've been paying attention to the other info released about the game (and it sounds like you have), the player ship is a very modular ship. It's special, it's experimental, it's upgradeable, it's changeable, etc. The reason not all weapons will be available at the beginning could be because your ship can't mount the guns, or handle the power necessary to fire, or etc. Another possibility is that there is a dynamic tech path for the game, that some things simply don't exist at the beginning of the game but as you play, they come about. Keep in mind there's actually a gigantic tech upheaval going on due to the nature of space travel changing in the X-Universe, so things almost certainly won't be as static as the previous games in regards to tech. Also keeping with the experimental and modular nature of the ship, it's likely that some weapons will "unlock" during the plot because you're actively involved in their development, which means that you might be the only ship that has them.
All of that is certainly different than just showing up at a space station and the option to buy a weapon is greyed out just because you haven't finished some part of the game. Now, I can't say for certain that will be how the weapons will be handled, but you're right in that it's so against the spirit of the X-Series games that I think these alternatives are very likely.
