If you just want them to wear extra bits, then remove the normal clothings and keep the armor parts, using replace to get the armor on, then over clothing so they can pick their own clothings up.
after a bit more playing around with it, that did the job just fine. thanks! i guess i'm slowly figuring it out now...
the military/squad interface would benefit from some simplification though.

@orca
found it and was on uniformed, thx!

Ownership will fade if it's left on floor after a few weeks, and if it's outside of their rooms.
If you have DFHack you can also force it with "cleanowned scattered"

I will run the experiment to completion anyway, however. Even if the only reason why there is a punctured equilibrium in the fortress is because I have been brutally butchering babies
EDIT: I just remembered that dwarves can't equip halberds. That might explain why the squads that use them always die.

thanks, I might use that in the future.

on a side note: "white metal" helms/gauntlets didn't seem to work. it did right away when I changed it to just "white"
i'll add it to the first post, so that others see how to fix it right away

one last thing: is there a workaround for miners/WC/hunters so far? i got them to equip the armor by disabling the respective labor but they will drop all of it again as soon as I send them out mining/cutting/hunting. i know that you can give them two weapons, one for work and one for duty. but that does not change the fact that they cannot wear protection while working. might be good for a woodcutter to have some armor if a siege arrives right next to him...

Sadly, no, I have to turn labor on and off. I ended up just turning the hunters into military marksmen and turn the miners and woodcutter's labor on and off as needed. Fortunately I don't need or uses too many, so I can lob the miners and woodchoppers into a group and name them the Gatherer, along with some herbalists.

Yeah, I recently had trouble with a woodcutter/axedwarf that would chop down trees, but fight bare-handed because I didn't have an "extra" axe.

It is in the "Bone" menu in the craftsdwarf shop.

Bone gauntlets, greavers, leggings and helms are the ones that can be crafted. They're all made at craftsdwarf shop and with bone carving job.

I think only other thing that can be made from bone for military purpose is bone crossbow and bolts, former need bowery job and shop, and latter's at craftsdwarf shop.

do gauntlets/boots always count as a pair? let's say i make two pairs like this:
*left gauntlet* and -right gauntlet-
left gauntlet and *right gauntlet*

do i have to equip them as pairs or can i forbid the bad ones and just use the good ones from different pairs?
funny game...as soon as one question is answered, another ten pop up :D

The wiki says there's bonr chestplates, but I have not been able to craft them in any workshoo.

Afghani84, yes they count as pairs. It's sufficiento assign one high boot to your military dwarves.

Boots and gauntlets as equipment usually counts as a pair, there're occasionally buggy instances, but it seem to be if you tries to set uniform to have like socks and boots at once or gauntlet and gloves/mittens at once. Letting dwarves dress themselves up haven't given me trouble.

They'll automatically upgrade to most valuable allowed equpiment that'll fit. And no, they aren't required to be in pair that was created, I often end up a bit too much of one side or other of gauntlets being superior and it haven't given any issue so far.

Not in vanilla stuff, it can be modded in, though. http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Armor#Material

I created a new squad and assigned Rigoth to it, set it to replace clothing and it works. No magic at all. See it for yourself.
