How to change dwarves' equipment?
« on: August 07, 2013, 08:46:28 am »

I know there are quite some threads out there about this topic but none of the solutions suggested in them seems to work.

Setup:
I like toMy OCD forces me to do some micro-management to make sure that every dwarf has the right equipment. So I usually create a squad right away and put everyone in there. I create a "Civilian" uniform with all the stuff the dwarves wear at embark, so that they don't strip naked. And once I made some armour, I adjust the civilian uniform by adding/deleting certain items.

Problem:
I just finished to make a set of bone helmets/gauntlets for my civilians and want to equip them. Thus I changed the "Civilian" uniform slightly - white metal helms instead of caps and white metal gauntlets instead of gloves. But no matter what I do, they do not equip the &$/% stuff. :-\

Failed Trials:
1. I know that equipping gear is low priority, so I disabled any other labour. Nothing happened...
2. I tried but "Partial Matches" and "Exact Matches". No difference...
3. I built a barracks. No idea if that is needed for it. Not assigning the squad to it for training did nothing and assigning them only made them train but not equip anything...
4. I changed the schedule to 1 soldier max to make sure that there are enough to trigger...I don't really know what that could possibly trigger but anyway...
5. Then I had the idea "Well, if they don't automatically pick up the bone stuff, I have to make them drop their caps/gloves first and then forbid them. That leaves them no choice but to pick up what's left, e.g. bone". Tried but forbidding their clothes and tell them to dump them...both to no avail...

I seriously don't know what to try anymore. Anyone with ideas how to get this mess sorted out? :-[

EDIT:
Suggestions
1: Toggle "Replace Clothing" - No change
2: Change to different uniform and then back to modified one - No change

SOLUTION (thanks to all!)
It seems to work with the following adjustments:
1. always use "exact matches" if you want them to wear specific armor
2. uniform originally set to "replace clothing"...the dwarves will strip naked apart from the armor pieces offered
3. uniform then changed back to "over clothing" makes them pick up their other clothes from the floor/cabinet again. if you don't want them to re-equip certain items, forbid them before you toggle back
4. points 2 and 3 can be done under (e) for the whole squad or for individual dwarves
5. bone armor can be specified by choosing "white" and leather "brown" as color

as far as I can tell schedules and barracks don't influence this process

Have you set their uniforms to "replace clothing"?

You will have to switch each squad to a different uniform then back to the modified one and when you exit the military screen they will dump their stuff and run about picking up the right gear. And yes, replace clothing too.

It's kind of messy. They dump stuff at random but eventually it all gets cleaned up and put on or stored.

I haven't played with bone much, but I can't imagine it would be classified as "white metal."

white metal helms instead of caps and white metal gauntlets instead of gloves.

I could totally be wrong, I don't use bone.

Replace Clothing is on. I did modify the uniform, then went (e),(U), picked the modified "Civilian" uniform for the squad, Shift+Enter and let the game resume. Nothing...

Btw...what if I just change equipment for one of the squad members (e.g. artifact)? Just change the item for that one person under (e) and done, right?

Pick any other uniform. shift+enter then pick the one you want them to use and shift+enter. If that doesn't work I'm sorry but I have no other suggestions.

that's what I meant. I shortly changed to marksdwarf outfits and then back to "Civilian" with the modified equipment. They don't seem to care. Interestingly they jumped to pick up crossbows the second I switched the uniform the first time though.  ::)

I've not had any trouble using just white for bone gears and brown for leather, no metal or anything in the designation. They're very slow to equip unless you station them.

Seems like you've tried everything but stationing them. Maybe put equipment list that you're using up, since I routinely dresses my civvies in leather legging, armor, high boots and bone gauntlets, the latter with 'white gauntlets'. Occasional leather helms with 'brown helms'. I've just checked, everything works properly for me with exact match and replace clothing.

I tried changing the squad to active/training if that is what you mean. but they did not pick up any equipment.

here's the equipment list with the modified pieces in brackets:

robes
cloaks
coats
dresses
hoods
caps (white metal helms)
trousers
mittens
gloves (white metal gauntlets)
socks
shoes

Wiki says bone is considered metal, but I don't trust it. It's better to just have them wear specific bone equipment, which they will listen to.

Also, you should just have them wear armor grade clothing instead of cloth and leather. It's not like they'll complain about having to strip down to nothing. Not in the military.

is inactive set to uniformed? also miners, hunters and wood cutters can bug out on uniforms since the game assigns them a hidden uniform when the labor is enabled

none of them are miners/hunters/wood cutters. and I'm not sure where I would toggle "inactive" as you say.

btw...don't know what I did or what happened but I got my dwarves to at least drop their stuff as intended with "replace clothing". all the clothes still have an owner. just trying to figure out how to get them dressed again since my "uniform" right now is basically what they were wearing before (apart from those two changes).

is there any way to disown dwarves or does ownership fade away over time? those clothes have been lying on the floor for over a week now and nothing happens. can't dump or move them...

Ownership will fade if it's left on floor after a few weeks, and if it's outside of their rooms. If you just want them to wear extra bits, then remove the normal clothings and keep the armor parts, using replace to get the armor on, then over clothing so they can pick their own clothings up. I think robe and coat together might give issue with wearing body armor, they're both outer clothings too. Cap and helm can't work together since both of them are shaped and tries to go on same body part, unless you meant headpiece by cap. Otherwise I don't see what's wrong with your list.

Are everything pathable to? Equipment pick-up might try to seek things that's behind locked door or out of reach, though I think they doesn't do that.
