The reinforced, rusty metal walls of the transport ship creak and groan out in pain as the ancient ship comes down from the upper tiers of the planet of Frieden's atmosphere. The insides of the ship are dimly lit, with large groups of guardsmen from the 666th Vniediken Aerial Infantry Regiment huddled together amongst various crates of supplies. It's been a particularly draining transit for most of the men, although with the perils of warp travel behind them the atmosphere was considerably lighter than it was a few days ago. The men and women of the Vniediken Aerial Infantry were weary and still tramatized by the loss of their homeworld to the Ork warbands that swarmed its surface, just before crashing a Rok right into the surface. It was a valiant effort to try to defend and re-take what was left intact, but the Orks wouldn't stop coming. Wave after wave of them swarmed across the dry planet, killing anyone who didn't flee the planetside and onto the refugee camps established on the nearby asteroid belts and moons. Imperial forces are still trying to reconquer the planet, but the 666th proved to be too small for any useful large scale tactics, and many of the soldiers within the regiment were scarred from the major losses they had to take while fighting on the planet. You were all instead sent to a planet a few sectors over, far away from the conflict of your homeworld and instead to the idyllic paradise of Frieden.
All you've been told of the planet and why you were being sent there is that there has been an upscale in Ork activity in a nearby sector, and you were to be sent their to reinforce the Friedenian regiments who have been recently raised to help combat this threat. Chances are it'll be a relatively peaceful few weeks ahead as you wait to be extracted elsewhere with them, and everyone apart of the 666th will have time to rest and relax on the temperate planet. A few snippits of information regarding the planet have passed around since then during your transit to the sector, mainly regarding that it's some backwater agri-world, and that no one there knew fuck all about fighting. You're not sure if you're supposed to be here to help train a bunch of hicks, or just help them once you get to the actual fighting. But hey, a couple weeks of relaxation sounds nice, doesn't it?
Your squad was put together after the reorganization ordered by Colonel Haddaway (Your regimental commander) that followed the decimation of nearly half of your regiment, and most of you were put together rather hastily without much thought, which is evident by the Commissar and Ministorium Priest present in the squad. Along with the new squad, you were put into a new platoon. You and the rest of the people in this transport ship represent around half of Platoon III, and most of you barely know each other.
The transport ship lurches again, sending one unlucky guardsmen trying to move around off his feet and onto the ground, followed by the coarse laughter of the men around him. This ride has felt almost like an eternity, and the lack of any food besides corpse starch rations is definitely not a positive. Although after a few more moments pass by, a man wearing the standard issue armor for your regiment, save for the insignia on his shoulder signifying he's a Lieutenant walks by. “Get your damn gear together, we're almost at Vander! Get ready to be processed, anyone who leaves their equipment behind is going to have to answer to me!” he yells out, before moving to the next cluster of guardsmen and repeating the same message.
All of the guardsmen around you get up, grabbing their gear and the crates around them for transport. Some of the stronger men and women hoist full disassembled heavy weapon bundles onto their shoulders, while the more sensible guardsmen begin to distribute the parts amongst their squad. Time to pack up and get ready to move out.
