So I have not played in a good long while (over a year) and decided to start a new fort on a terrifying glacier what sadomasochistic things do you do to yourself in the name of a challenge?

I've been known to gleefully trigger multiple loyalty cascades whenever the morons dwarves get too prosperous. Does that count?

When you start a 20-year megaproject and actually finish it.

I've been considering building a bridge over a strait in the ocean. By obsidian-casting the support pillar(s), of course. And building the fortress, or part of it, in said obsidian pillars. In the current version, it would be preferable for it to be only one site, so max 4-5 wide embark for max 3-4 embark tile wide straight; with retiring, chaining multiple sites would be more acceptable. In general, looking forward to retiring forts as a way to build roads and new forts and just generally expand your dwarf civ. The bridge would be a part of that. Expanding the road network, that is. Damming a (huge!) river and creating an artificial lake could be another cool megaproject as well. Of course, the dwarves could live inside the dam, you could have realistic water turbines, waterfalls for your dwarves would be easy to implement, etc. Not too easy to find a good site for this though, I think.

I remember the attempt, not sure if it happened though.

Wasn't over an entire world, but it was certainly multi-embark project to build some ruined-looking walls over part of land between mountains. I remember that it happened a few years ago, either during late 40d or early 31.xx. It involved a lot of marble, too.

Late 40d.  I missed 31.xx.

Yes, all you need is a constructed channel (can be made from entirely constructed walls and floors above the surface if you will) and let some fluid enter. If you want a decent flow instead of lazy oozing (particularly magma/lava can be quite sluggish), you'll need to pump the fluid. Make sure your plumbing is up to code before activating the magma pumps. A pumped fluid will fill every available space up to the level of the pump output; 'pressure breakers' and closable furniture will be needed to keep fluids out of places you don't want them.

Oh, right - and magma is hot enough to melt/burn some materials. Using those in your pumps and floodgates/mechanisms etc. can cause !!fun!!

It changes when the challenge runs out, of course.
