A Very Inventive Moody Dwarf
« on: August 06, 2013, 05:01:45 pm »

My current fort has a very standard set up metalworking room. Magma forge, Slag Pit, Magma Smelter and a corridor leading to a bar stockpile.

While messing around trying to set up a whip vine mill I get the message that one of my smiths has gone moody. A quick zoom and i see him running to his forge and starting to gather materials as usual and he quickly gets to work.

Fast forward until a little while after, And he has created a mechanized axe thrower, But something is not quite right. When he started gathering he immediately grabbed the nearest bar to use as the base metal. Can you guess what bar just so happened to be closest? A bar of slag. He used SLAG to make his super artifact doomweapon. I can just imagine a soldier holding this long, crusty black object and firing at a goblin only for the handle to disintegrate and cover his shirt in black dust. Clearly Mr Smithy will pave the way for a new age of cost-effective dwarven weaponsmithing.

The military is all gathered in one huge mass on top of the ramp to the mountaintop, where the entrance is. Apparently they spend their time taking potshots at owls, pushing babies off the ledge, and giggling.

I always stockpile my best weapons grade materials closest to the forge and move the base metals further away, anything that produces slag should be placed some distance away. In my experience this leads to the best artifacts.

If slag is as heavy as it used to be then i can imagine it would make a monster of an artifact warhammer though.

I really have to find a solution for this, but I cant really affect dwarf moods. And I cant affect the normal smelting reaction, thats why I added slag as a mineral. All ores are also ores of slag, which leads to it being recognized as a bar, metal and buildmat.

I take it you can't just replace the buildings like you did the kiln? Is there a way to hide the vanilla buildings?

Someone, get the bug zapper! What do you mean that won't work on a bug the size of a house which glows? No, I don't want to hear it. Just get the damn zapper.

Could you make slag an organic? They seem to want metal/rock bars.

No, I tried everything I can. Smelter reactions are hardcoded. I can make slag like the "massive slag bars" which are actually tools, but I can only do this with custom reactions. This would mean that the smelter itself does not produce slag anymore, which is silly, because most smelting is done there.

If you'd have checked the raws, you would have found this entry:
Slag:-SPECIAL- => hopefully helps with moods.

Its already removed, didnt help. :-\

I'm still on 3b, but since I removed it from the raws in 3b I haven't had a single slag artifact. Could just be a coincidence though...

Once a Kobold made me a slag chopper. Looking at the metals table, it seems slag has an extreme density. One should try to get a slag warhammer.

Marksdwarves will bash people with their axe throwers if they get too close right? So this could still be useful

It depends on the type of melee attack the weapon has. Vanilla crossbows use a blunt bash attack, while the slings use an edge lashing attack (and are surprisingly painful, from what my adventurer can recall). The axe throwers have one edge attack and two blunt ones.

Steps when a mood occurs.

1: Lock the dwarf in the Workshop. I put doors in all workshops just for this.

2: See what kind of materials he wants.

3: Stock screen, forbid anything you don't want to be used.

4: Enjoy¡

In a hole in the ground there lived a dwarf. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a dwarf fortress, and that means magma.
