Do make a bigger excursion on horseback, provided planting season is over.
Different crops and all, you never know. Else, do so armed, and inquire into those "different people" further.

We also might want to look into lumbering.
You easily pull around tons of wood each day. Horse can help. Just make sure we donīt work it to the bone.

Try to endear yourself to the populace. Garner Reputation and Information.
Ask them about what ails them in the year, or on occasion. You are also pretty surely the only one with a "real" sword around those parts. Try the protector angle mayhaps? ( Yes, yes - we will turn out to be otherwise later. But hey.)

We also might want to practice our swings.
Killing a scarecrow should pose no problem at the end of this month, set out for badgers on the next. :P

See if we can't get a guide to take us deeper into the marshes. See what we find!

watching.

Suggest we start looking in to moving to the island in the middle of the river. If not now, then soon, so we can lay claim to the land there without having to anger any peasants.

Someday I'll find a hilarious quote and put it here...

Dominic Soan thinks that between claiming the island, exploring the marsh, large scale lumbering, or large scale hunting, he could only personally work on one of them.

Let's not remove Soan from the village just yet. Even if we don't go with rudimentary communism, I'd prefer to be closer to the peasants.

I suggest exploring the marsh. We can claim the island once we're finished with that. Lumbering and hunting can be taken care of by peasants once we've got enough people.

Well, have to agree with Play-Doh. The Question is if we are sustainable yet. But retracting the lumbering option for now. We might need to rent the horse out again, if the need arises.

Dominic Soan thinks that he could rent out the horse half of the time and thus he can go on a day trip on a horse.

Late March, Year 1

Things finally got settled down. While it does not sound very noble-like to eat tubers every day, at least it is satiates your hunger. A young man, called Arrigo, told you that there are two distinct kinds of tubers grown in the area: The lotus which grows in the water, and the taro which prefers drier ground. He also told you about the different crops grown in the area, and you thanked him for sharing this important knowledge. You started a small taro garden besides your shack which should be enough to feed a man for the year.

Meanwhile, the planting season has ended, and you decided to take a tour of the land on your steed. You were especially intrigued by the rumors of a very different people in the general area: after all you are supposed to be overlord for the area, and you demand to see everyone of your subjects. Most have shunned away from this idea, even the apparently knowledgeable Arrigo; However, a short man with a crooked spine, called Morfeo, said he know exactly how to find that people.

For the following two days, you see no sign of civilization. The marsh has given way to a more woody swamp, and you hear the howls of wild game, until the swamp finally gave way to a small clearing. It was dusk, and you were told to keep a distance from the edge by Morfeo; out of the woods you saw a very large wooden hut, and a few figures working around the fire in front of it, seemingly preparing food.

"What an amazing discovery", you whispered to Morfeo, not wanting to make them notice you. So, what will you do next, Dominic Soan, the tuber-eater?

I suppose we should introduce ourselves. Unless Morfeo decrees that unsound.

Go chat to them. AT NO POINT TRY TO ASSERT AUTHORITY. Just say we have been awarded stewardship of the lands and we want to get to know everyone.

Perhaps a few minutes of observation would be wise, given the crooked man's hesitance. Then, if we see no clear danger, let's introduce ourselves.

Thrice you wanted to go forth to introduce yourself, but Morfeo replied each time by raising his arm in front of and across you.

"What's going on?" you asked, in a very low voice.
"Patience." replied Morfeo, in his hushing yet creaky voice. "It is not yet the right time."

With the Sun quickly setting, all you can see is the fire, and the shadow of the men cast in front of it. Now it counts as four attempts, with Morfeo blocking you in the same way for all four times.

"Morfeo, I guess I am the Baron of this place." You were getting really annoyed. "At least tell me what is going on, if you know anything about them."
"You are legally the Baron," Morfeo looked at you in a smirking smile, "But if they are not recognizing you, like everyone else in this area, you are no better than I in this regard."
"Tell me, Morfeo. There must be something going on."
"They are not one of us, as you can see. Or rather, we are the foreigners on from this land. They dress differently, follow different customs, and speak a different language. You saw that pike?" Morfeo pointed at some shiny spike as he spoke.
"Yes," you replied, "it looked quite well made, in fact."
"I knew a few men, who approached them in the wrong manner, and ended up on that pike. If not for me I fear you would be the next in line, my liege." Morfeo spoke mockingly. "Certainly you treasure your life more than I do."
"Then what it all these about?" You were pretty much enraged, but still kept control of your voice.
"They do not entertain guests after raising that fire, and actually they are closed to outsiders after noon. We have to wait for everyone to sleep before making our move. Lets quietly make camp here, and we will make our move tomorrow."

Without a choice, you reluctantly complied, and slept on the ground under a makeshift tent, rolled in a blanket.

"Morfeo?" Still lying prone, you found Morfeo was gone when you were sleeping. "Where are you Morfeo?"
"Shhhh. They don't like a lying man yelling at them. Get up, and prepare. It looked like they will entertain guests today."
"Ah, finally. let me meet my subjects."
"Watch your tongue, my liege", replied the crooked man as he was breaking down the camp. "Respect them, as you respect your lord. They may be able to understand you."
"Morfeo, I guess I told you before we set out. We are contacting them, not asserting any kind of authority."
"I hope you keep your word."

Within a few minutes you are standing in front of the longhouse. You heard Morfeo speaking with the people with a tongue that you don't really understand; you made out a few words, but no more than that.
"They welcome you," Morfeo turned towards you. "Please keep respect, however, as you are entering their private space.

You entered the house. It was made of wood, and you could immediately see the much higher quality of carpentry and craftsmanship. There was also a large piece of fur, likely whole from an animal, hung on the backside of the wall; below it, a big man sat on another piece of similar fur, while you were told to sit on the wooden floor. You noticed that he is holding a spear and never puts it down. It is as tall as him, with the metal on its business end almost a foot long. You also saw a lot of idols lying around on the floor, which you wanted to show your disgust but you held back. That man offered you to a drink, brewed by one of the tribe, and you have no choice but oblige. After all you are very thirsty.

You, through Morfeo, introduced yourself to the man, and he replied that he is called Supanow, the leader of this household. He welcomed you, but he is very determined to show that he is the one running business, not you. You asked on the subject of trade, and he laughed off the idea, saying that they have everything they ever need. He also talked about a few similar people around the area, though you don't see the point in asking for detailed instructions: if they are worth a visit Morfeo will arrange it for you you thought. You also asked whether he know the production of Iron, as he is holding a pretty large one, but he said it was a gift from the gods.

You looked outside. The sun is almost on top of you, and you remember they will not welcome guests after noon. You think you still have time for a few questions. What will you ask from Supanow, the one legally known as Baron Dominic Soan?

Sorry for the railroad. Normal turn will resume soon.

Thank him for his courtesy, and tell him that you wish for peacefull relations between both of your people.

This should make the Intentions that are best for us at the moment clear enough. We obviously would have to see if we want to honour them in the long run, but I think to agree that we do like our own life more than Morfeo does. :P

I would refrain from asking him to come to us if there are problems with "our" people, as I get the inkling that this could be understood as an Insult of the likes that he could not handle it himself. Passing the message along that we wish for peacefull relations might be worth a try, but unless our folks do something stupid, I doubt it is needed, so also -snip- to that.

You told Morfeo that you wanted to thank Supanow for his courtesy and hospitality, and you have to leave and wish for peaceful relations between both of your people.

Supanow seemed to be a bit perplexed about it, and talked to Morfeo, seemingly a bit annoyed. As translated by Morfeo, he said he don't really understand why your kind always make the point to emphasize that, before appearing in a few years with an army. He hoped that you will keep your word, but it seemed that you have offended the man in some way. Feeling awkward, you feel that it is the time to bid farewell, and instruct Morfeo to tell him you are leaving and thanks him once more.

"Arayom", replied the man. Morfeo said it means "Goodbye".

---------

"Morfeo," as you were walking far enough for the small settlement to fade into background, "Maybe I'm rude here but I guess you know too much. You must be hiding something from me."
"Hiding?" He looked at you with his habitual disdain-y face, "Better say, you never asked."
Morfeo told you about himself. He was once a court jester of another Barony, but with his lord killed in a bloody internal coup he knew his time was up. He moved to this wetland as he contemplated that most will not bother to look for a missing person here, and he settled - better said he roved around the area, and made a living by begging household by household, learning the native tongue of the natives in the process.

You also know that despite his skills, he is illiterate. When asked about how he know that you are not the one trying to kill him, he replied, with a smirk, that no one searches for a fugitive without bringing enough food. And he laughed off, as you returned to the road.

Here ends March. What is your plans for the next month, Baron Dominic Soan the Diplomat?

The language Supanow speaks is Amis, an Austro-polynesian language.
