Wayward Stars - System (15, 10)
« on: August 05, 2013, 04:40:25 pm »

After two dark ages, five interstellar wars and governmental unification, mankind has finally achieved its dream. On September third, 31 U. the United Government has publicly unveiled the existence of faster than light travel. With robotic testing having successfully been completed, the UGS Unity has been outfitted for its maiden voyage. The first in hopefully a long line of interstellar scout ships, the UGS Unity has the best technology humanity can offer, an elite hand-picked crew, and a highly-advanced AI to manage the ship's robotic and automatic systems. With such a broad base of support, humanity's first voyage to the stars is certain to be a successful one.

Feel free to ask any questions about the rules if you have any questions. The beginning of the game is pretty simple, but later on things will get more complicated.

Name: Kathryn Malone
Position: Engineer
Gender: Female
Age: 28
Description: A lean and short woman with short, dark red hair and blue eyes. Physically toned and pretty, if not conventionally beautiful-she's forgone all genetic aging treatments and perfection solutions. Rough hands and a tan from work outdoors. Not uncomfortable wearing a stetson with her uniform, even if it's not regulation.
Background: The four hundred and fortysixth clone of the daughter of a wildly successful businessman who wanted to undergo what he termed the 'Thousand Lives Experience' to achieve a step closer to nirvana-by the process of cloning himself and his family a thousand times, placing them into various social strata and levels of resource, while watching, and playing God with their lives occasionally. Needless to say, he's watched his daughter-almost always some variation on Kathryn-become a professional athlete, a law enforcement officer, a Nun, a dishwasher, a paid assassin, a lounge singer, a space trucker, a prostitute...among hundreds of other fates.

Kathryn Malone knows all of this, and has such always sought to prove to her distant relation that's she is not just a copy of a person he knew-she and her family was placed into the 'destitution' category of the lower class of Earths slums, and knowing exactly what probability was predicated for her fate, she always sought to overcome him and the restrictions the distant God placed on her. By 16, she had learned basic starship mechanics on the go, and was part timing in the local ship mill. By 19 she jumped on the nearest vessel-the UGS Scarlet-pretending she belonged there. It took a few months for the crew to catch on she was essentially a stowaway. Lucky for her, the Captain decided not to give her a summary execution, as was common in the old days. Instead he gave her exactly what she wanted-ten years penal duty in UGS fleet engineering core.

She used this as an excuse to get the toughest, craziest jobs-and to complete her formal training, though her tech skills already surpassed most of her peers. Kathryn Malone became a minor legend for her hands on and common sense solutions. She eventually hit pay dirt, slapping together a half destroyed transport shuttle and helping an Admiral escape from a disintegrating battle platform. He promised her choice of any position-and chose the Unity with no hesitation. Her skills would prove her right.

Kathryn knows 'Daddy' is still watching her-though who she considers her real father is actually a much kinder, more gentle man-and is somewhat relieved in the hope that even she might outrun that minor Gods all seeing eye. Still, Kathryn can never entirely know how much of her life she has achieved on her own merits and how much he has manipulated...

Good morning crew. I am Maria, your AI aboard the UGS Unity. I have full control over all systems, but will content myself with managing the autonomous systems of the ship and leaving all major decisions to you. Please be aware that the United Government has uploaded additional procedures that will allow me total command of the UGS Unity in several critical situations. However I trust in your professionalism and believe that I will never have to execute those procedures.

As this is the very first live test of the wrap drive, the Council has elected that you may fly as you see fit. Due to security reasons this information has not been disclosed until now. However the Council has left a series of instructions for you to follow. The Council wishes you to scout out the planets in the nearby systems using the sensor drones we have been equipped for this task. Telescope data shows that these planets are not habitable for life, but may contain large quantities of minerals suitable for setting up outposts and mines for further expansion. A task group of drones, AIs and androids is being assembled for this purpose and will be ready by the time you return. Additionally the Council wishes you to visit the system at (15, 10). If you are not aware, a Martian generation ship began its journey to this system in -451 U. Telescope data shows that the second planet in this system has signs of inhabitance, though we will not know the exact state of the colony until we reach it. This marks the end of the Council's instructions.

I will be happy to answer any questions you might have, but otherwise I look forward to starting our journey.

To make my life a bit easier, if you're going to talk to the AI please clearly state that. Either with something along the lines of Maria: "blah" or AI: "blah" or "Can I do this, Maria/AI?". Otherwise, you have a route to plan.

Kitty, sitting in the pilot seat, turned to the rest of crew "So, we check the nearby systems first before heading to 15,10?"

Don't worry, more positions will be created as the game progress. So you have a good shot of playing.

Computer, what tactical data do we have on the surrounding systems?

System 15,13 has 3 scannable planets. System 16,14 has 2 scannable planets. System 17,13 has 4 scannable planets. System 17,12 has 3 scannable planets, while system 18,13 has 2 planets. None of the planets in these systems show any signs of inhabitance or life forms. Therefore scanning these systems should be routine.

If you are planning to visit system 15,10 last, I would recommend using all of your drones in the other systems. The Martian colony should be able to provide us with the data we need if they still exist.

Cyd:  Maria, once a drone is released does it have the capability to travel to other planets within the system, or must it remain at one planet?
