Unable To Designate ANY Tiles To Mine, Build Stairs, Channel
« on: August 05, 2013, 04:24:27 pm »

I an unable to designate anything to be dug out for mine, build stairs, or channel, however gathering and chop down tree works just fine.

d to bring up menu
d to select mine
move cursor to corner of square using arrow keys
hit enter on the first corner to make a flashing "+" to appear
move cursor to second corner to create a rectangle shape
hit enter again, and the "+" disappears with nothing being highlighted to be mined out

Exact same thing happens with build stairs and channel also.

I can, select trees and plants to be gathered using the same method.

Hmmm...... are you designating an under-ground area to be dug out (for the mining selection)? You can't mine out a wall on an open space above ground... as for the staircase... are you designating 'downward staircase' to be carved out of the floor or building (i made this mistake myself)

If that's not it; maybe try restarting DF.
If that's not it; check did you embark with miners and some picks? I'm sure that has anything to do with it though...

Hello fellow noob!

I had this saaaaaaame problem, my guess is your trying to mine on the surface, you have to mine into a rock wall. Once you get down a z level (underground) mining functions like you are expecting.

Stairs were tricky for me for awhile too, but basically, if your placing a stairway down and nothing below it is mined yet, you would use the (d)esignate menu to make them.

If you are building stairs in an area that is already mined out and cleared, you would use the (b)uild command.

Don't forget to use shift+> to go down a z-level and shift+< to go up.

Hope this helps, if not I can try to clarify it a little more.

Mining can only be designated underground, as in below the surface. Channeling can be designated above-surface, but it digs down, same for down stair.

If you want to build, or stay aboveground, then use the b-c menu to build walls and stair aboveground.

Also watch out to have CAPSLOCK disabled.
I once spent 5 minutes searching why I couldn't do a thing....  ::)
