When I said WOTR didn't have horses I was trying to say that the horses they implemented were ridiculously awful to the point where they didn't seem like horses.

Anyways, I guess I'll wait and see how it pans out, not seeing anything too awfully wrong with it so far other than the strange lack of thrusting (honestly, if it's not telegraphed enough, make it telegraphed more? Or give it some other kind of drawback?)

My mistake. The English language really need sarcasm marks since tone is so hard to determine from text.

I think why they removed thrusting, and this is my own theory and not anything stated by the devs, is due to a rather large community backlash against thrusting weapons in WotR. The spear was really described as the "noobtube" of WotR and "thrusting spam" was pretty rampant amongst new players. I think they might have over zealously tried to "fix" the problem by just flat out removing it. I don't think it was a smart move on their part but it's still fairly early in development so we might see it come back.

Hmmmph, spears are probably one of my favorite old-time weapons simply because of how damn effective they were, and simple at that =p
The problem with spears in Warband, Chivalry, and maybe even WotR (I don't know about that cause I havem't played it much) is that they don't really have a minimum range. Warband kiiiiiinda does but they are ways to get around it. Once the guy gets too close for you to use the spear you're supposed to drop it and draw your sword.

Oh well, if they do the actual sword fighting wlel enough it could make up for the lack of spears. Did they happen to remove polearms in general? That would be unfortunate.

My memory is a little fuzzy about polearms, we spoke pretty late into the night about all kinds of detail and a couple beers didn't quite help either.

I believe he said that polearms are currently not in the game. This would make sense they're currently lacking a "thrust block". He did express interest in having spears in the game but did go on to say they would have to completely change the animations from WotR since apparently Vikings used spears above the shoulder rather than at hip level like more modern spear users. Again this is something I'm not too sure about historically, I always thought it was the celt/gauls that used spears above the shoulder (I remember something about roman historians comparing them to greek hoplites) and germanic cultures to use the spear from the hip, I could very much be wrong though.
I don't think there was a wide range of polearms at the time however. I think there were only different flavours of spear so we won't be seeing any of the more "exotic" polearms.

Something else I left out on the list is there is no longer squad spawning (thank god). Now instead of being able to spawn on the squad leader the squad can now "plant a banner" which acts as both spawn point and a buff totem.
There is also a new arena mode which features extremely small maps that heavily favour melee. Nothing more to say there.

The gameplay footage looks more horrendous than War of the Roses.  It's like everything is sped up by 40 percent faster than it should be.  Arcadey to the max.  No spears?  Spears were a very commonly used weapon, being the cheapest to make.  Also, they use the Bitsquid "Engine"; it is a terrible thing to make a game off of.  Compare it to Mount and Blade, and you can clearly see which one is more smooth.

Just noticed the alpha came up in my steam account. Unfortunately they have a rather strict NDA so you won't be getting any information from me.
