Can I stuff a dwarf in a cage?
« on: August 05, 2013, 12:25:09 pm »

hey I just found another vampire in my group. I want to do something a bit more interesting than simply walling the leech up. I recently constructed an artifact glass cage; can I stuff her in the cage and put her on display? Barring that, I was thinking about sequestering the vampire in a small room (full of danger!) near the entrance and when a siege happens release the vampire. This second method would likely end with a fair amount of !!fun!! I'd prefer the first option, though; can it be done?
Thanks in advance

3 methods for getting dwarf into a trap, only 2 sensible for vampire.

1) Pen them inside a tiny room on top of the trap until they sleep on it. (wont work on vampire)
--1a) Drop dwarf onto trap so they pass out on trap. (wont work on vampire)

2) Webbing on cagetrap.

3) Dangerroom with wooden spike trap, and a cagetrap. Dwarf dodges spike trap, ends up in cage.

4) JUSTICE! Build that cage, make a (r)oom from it, set it to (j)ustice, make sure no-one else is sentenced to inprisonment, convict the guy, wall him in with bars or windows so they can't release him when his time is up.

What happens when you deconstruct a justice cage with a prisoner in it?

You pretty much have dwarf stuck in a cage, at least it worked back in 31.08 last time I tried it. I've not tried lately because of starvation issue.

Can't you just drop him one z-level onto a cage trap? Or are vampire stun-immune?

Vampires don't normally sleep. Even while under the influence of a syndrome, they constantly wake back up. Stun may not be enough to get him trapped. Webbed is different from stun.

You need unconcious, usually.

It's not stun, you need unconsciousness. And yes, vampires are immune to both.

i'm in the process of setting up the spike trap now to see if I can get her to jump into the cage. If I do put her on display will she continue to interact with other dwarves? I mean will her social skills continue to increase, and will relationships form?

No, but I've seen a tantrumming dwarf unlock a prisoner's cage before.

I can't get her to go into the room. I assigned the danger room as a burrow for just her and set her to mine out a part of the wall in there (because the wiki said that I needed to assign a task within the burrow to get a dwarf to go there). She is just standing around and dwarf therapist says "no job". I disabled all other miners so they wouldn't go in there instead. help?

Is she currently equipped with a pick? Could be she can't go mine because she would need to go pick up a pick outside of the allowed burrow.

yes she had a pick. she came as a migrant skilled in mining then ate a legendary miner. I got her in there by having her smooth one of the walls, locked the door behind her, and started the danger. She eventually dodged into the cage but did not get caught. Should I have set the cage up as a cage trap or should I have just placed the cage down? Second method hasn't worked

Built cage doesn't do much of anything, it's for assigning creatures into it. Cage trap's what you want if you're trying to knock someone into one.

finally got it set up so my mechanic would use the artifact cage for the trap; apparently artifact cages cannot be used in traps  >:(
I had a stockpile for cages and forbid all of the other cages I had except the artifact. This didn't work; my mechanic used the forbidden cages to build traps. So, I then built a 1X1 stockpile right next to the trap spot just for the artifact so he would try to use that one first then I forbid all other cages again. The message is now "Urist DumbAsRocks cancels load cage trap; needs empty cage". Any ideas?

edit for coherence
