I don't think they'll use a barrel out of a food stockpile link to brew.  It has to be a furniture stockpile.  I use two links to the still.  One for plants, and one for pots.  To keep them from using my few precious barrels.

Unless I'm mistaken, only barrels with food in them are considered to be stored in a food stockpile without custom settings. This means that empty barrels can't be 'given' by a food stockpile, only a furniture stockpile.

That said, if you know your way around stockpile settings, it's trivial to edit your food stockpile to also accept empty barrels. This isn't the most efficient way of storing them, and it is possible. The few times I've done it, it appeared to make dwarves put loose food items in barrels more often but I have no real evidence that it works that way.

Filled barrel + 1 up to the stockpile barrel setting. It's pretty annoying with drink stockpiles because there're always one empty barrel/pot getting in the way that can't be used, it does get used for non-liquids, though.

And I can get a still to use barrels out of food stockpile, it just have either be linked to the still and not have enough furniture space to take the unassigned ones away, or the still have no 'give to stall' links. Having loose barrel in non-liquid stockpiles does encourages dwarves to use them more efficiently since they don't have to haul one in from elsewhere, but gotta make a lot more to set them aside :D

OK I found out a solution...I simply REMOVED(!) all the "give to" settings of all the stockpiles, and it started working - the brewer is now happily brewing away. I can only assume there is a bug in the stockpile "give to" settings... ?? Either that or I completely misunderstand what the "give to" thing is about.

Sorry, I meant to tell you to disable all that crap.  Glad you figured it out, though.

The barrels with the TSK next to them are the newly created barrels that are instantly tasked to be hauled out.  So the carpenter made two, and was probably in the process of making a 3rd while you checked.

And yeah, rock pots are much better than barrels.  You usually have more rock than wood, and they store more.  It's pretty much the only thing I use craftsdwarfs for.  The only reason to make wooden barrels is because sometimes you specifically need a barrel.  I know the Dyer needs one.  I think the ashery and/or soapmaker do as well.

Wooden pots can be made, and I uses them pretty often, partially because I brings too much wood to my embark and tend to get stuck above aquifier for a bit :D

Large pots store around 2.5 times more than barrels does, and, I think, are actually lighter. Pretty much only reason to not use pots for storage is if you want everything masterwork, since bed have to be made too and pot making involves woodcrafting and not carpenter.

If you have a food stockpile set to give to the still, then the still will only accept inputs from linked stockpiles.  This means it won't be able to take any barrels or pots unless you also link a barrel/pot stockpile to the same still.

That is in fact what I do in my own fortresses.  The 3x3 still is built in the middle of a 5x5 dug-out room.  The outer ring of open space is then split into a food stockpile (accepts only brewable plants, takes from links only, takes from my main plant stockpile, gives to the still) and a furniture stockpile (accepts barrels and pots only, takes from anywhere, gives to the still).

The extra barrel that gets stored in a food stockpile is reserved for putting food in.  You can't use it for brewing.  If you want to link stockpiles to your still, one of them must be a furniture stockpile.

Ahhhh, that makes total sense and completely explains the problems I was having. Thanks so much - this is a great example of why DF can be so hard to understand - the rule that it's either ONLY linked stockpiles or none at all is one that you will only find out when you run into issues... maybe it should be added to the "Still" Wiki article?

It affects all workshops, it probably should be in the stockpile article. I barely visits wiki so I don't know if it's been mentioned there, I hope it is.

You're right - it's there in the Stockpile article, right in the "Give To" paragraph! So as usual it comes down to me not knowing the Dwarf Fortress "Bible" well enough. :-X

This option is quite powerful, but should be used very carefully as the linked workshop will now only take from the stockpiles set to give to that workshop. Make sure that the workshop gets all of the materials needed for its jobs there if you use this feature.

Well, it's what forum is for! Ask and get some answers, hopefully some of them clear enough to figure out :D
