Axes (and swords, to a lesser extent) are pretty much the only thing that reliably kill inorganic megabeasts. Every weapon kills everything else. Therefore, go with axes.

Depends.

If you like cleaning up multiple severed parts and want your enemies to end up like the black knight of Monty Python, swords.

If you want quick clean deaths from bodies being chopped wholly in half, go axes.

I always have at least one squad of soldiers with each weapon, for tactics and stuff....and because its hilarious to see the different weapons in action.

Swords: body parts flying everywhere
axes; quick finish, go back and get a drink
spears: poke and lots of blood or poke and stand around for a month twisting
hammers: BODIES flying everywhere

and I like crossbows because, unlike weapon swings, you can see the bolts flying across the map.  Its very satisfying.

In that case, I would vote spears. For a real challenge, though, try armoring and equipping your entire fortress as part-time soldiers. Sieges aren't so tough when you have more soldiers than the attackers do.

This fortress is a eugenics research experiment.

*ALL* valid candidates will become military!  Massive food, booze, and clothing stockpiles have been produced already. Currently sitting on over 40,000 units of booze, and 10,000 units food. That's enough to last a LONG time.

Fortress is currently turtled, and not in dire need of weapon traps. Currently in preparations for that stage of construction. No more migrant waves, fortress literally walled in.

Cavern layer 1 breached, then sealed. Magma from magma pool safely tapped and double fortification slitted for filtering out swimming badness.

Right now, harvesting and processing of wood from the growing chambers, and additional harvesting of flux stone commences. More Iron ore popped up in the process.  I'm in no hurry at the moment.

Clay and sand are available, along with magma from the now tamed magma pool. Glass disc spam is perfectly possible.

You should put some of that metal into minecarts, and build a Dwarven Dishwasher, especially if you have undead around. It cleans filthy corpses to keep your map traversable, and can easily be repurposed to clean invaders as well. You will quarry bushes, however.

Axes.
Discs.
Ballista arrows.
I'm curious as to what happens to a bronze colossus when impaled by a giant steel arrow. Nothing, something, hilarity?

The undead are a FEATURE, not a problem.  They are safely contained inside the necromancer's tower I built on top of. (Embark!)

They make a delightful way of disposing of undesirable culls. I have a special drop pit with a special burrow on top of it, just for those special individuals. They fall into the foyer of the necro tower. The necromancers and zombies have dinner and a movie, and I dont have to deal with weaklings anymore. Win Win.

The baron just made a mandate for hammers. Time to tap some tetrahedrite.

I give my early dedicated guard a sword, actually, just for versatility. Their purpose is just to protect me from wandering evil until I finish my first deathtrap.

Dunno about everyone else, but for me swords seem to be more of a quick kill while axes are the dismembering tool of choice...

I usually use a squad of each weapon, but start with axes or swords in non-evil embarks, hammers or maces for evil ones.

I'm partial to hammers, although thats a waste of steel when other materials work just as well. I always like to have some swordsdwarves around, they're versatile. Axes are good, but in my experience axedwarves like to dismember each limb separately. And its just smart to have some speardwarves around.

Personally I like versatility in my military, and only ever have a few squads dedicated to a single weapon.
